Chapter 8 - Secrets and Promises

By six o'clock on Sunday evening, the sun was setting behind the rolling hills of Westchester County. The estate had been completely cleared, the intruders removed, and the security systems fully restored.

Claire stood in the grand foyer wearing her dried clothes, her thrift-store suitcase packed and sitting beside her feet. Lily stood beside her, fully recovered and clutching a brand-new teddy bear that Caleb had gifted her.

Adrian walked down the stairs holding an envelope. He stopped in front of Claire and handed it to her. Inside was a cashier's check for $100,000—five times the agreed amount—along with official bank documents showing that her apartment lease had been paid in full for the next two years.

"The forty-eight hours are officially over, Ms. Donovan," Adrian said, his voice formal, though his eyes burned with an unmistakable warmth. "You have fulfilled your end of the agreement. Your driver is waiting outside."

Claire looked down at the check, then up at Adrian. She had won. Her debt was gone. Her daughter was secure. She could walk away and never look back at the dangerous, chaotic world of Adrian Moretti.

She picked up her suitcase and turned toward the door.

"Claire! Wait!"

Three pairs of small feet came pounding down the marble stairs. Noah, Caleb, and Miles sprinted across the foyer, throwing their arms around Claire's waist, burying their faces into her coat.

"Don't go," Noah cried, throwing away his usual calculating stoicism.

"You promised water dries!" Caleb yelled, tears spilling down his cheeks. "You said you weren't leaving!"

Miles looked up at her, clutching the hem of her jacket with tiny, shaking hands. "Please, Claire. We don't want another nanny. We want you."

Claire felt a lump form in her throat as she looked down at the three boys who had gone from throwing water buckets at her head to begging her to stay. She looked up at Adrian, who stepped forward, his eyes filled with a raw, desperate hope.

"I promised the agency I would offer you the position," Adrian said softly, taking a step closer until he was standing only inches from her. "Not as a temporary caregiver under a ridiculous contract. But as the head of this household. Stay with us, Claire. Let me give you and Lily a real home. We need you. I need you."

Claire looked down at Lily, who was smiling happily as the triplets showed her a magic trick. Then she looked back at Adrian, reaching out to gently touch his cheek. "On one condition, Adrian," she said with a tearful smile. "No more secret contracts. And no more walls."

Adrian smiled—a genuine, radiant smile that transformed his stern face entirely. "Deal," he whispered.
