Chapter 4 - A Mother’s Touch

At two o'clock on Saturday afternoon, the fragile peace was shattered. Claire’s phone buzzed aggressively on the dining table. It was Mrs. Gable's sister, whom Claire had hired to watch her six-year-old daughter, Lily, back in their small Queens apartment.

"Claire, you need to come home right now," the sitter’s voice was panicked over the speaker. "Lily’s fever spiked to 104. She’s shivering, throwing up, and crying for you. I don't know what to do!"

Panic flared through Claire's veins like wildfire. Her heart hammered against her ribs, completely erasing all thoughts of money, contracts, or the estate. "Call an ambulance! I’m coming right now," she gasped, her hands shaking violently as she hung up the phone.

She sprinted upstairs, grabbed her thrift-store suitcase, and threw her clothes inside without packing them properly. The $20,000 signing bonus meant nothing if her child was in danger. Eviction, debt, homelessness—none of it mattered compared to Lily.

As she rushed down the grand staircase, her suitcase half-unzipped, she ran straight into Adrian, who was standing at the base of the stairs with his phone in hand.

"Where do you think you're going?" he demanded, his eyes narrowing as he blocked her path. "Your forty-eight hours are not up, Ms. Donovan. If you walk out that front door, the contract is null and void."

"I don't care about your damn contract!" Claire screamed, tears streaming down her face as her composure completely disintegrated. "My daughter is six years old and burning up with a dangerous fever! Keep your money, keep your fortress, keep everything! Get out of my way!"

She tried to push past him, but Adrian caught her firmly by the arms. For a second, Claire expected him to enforce his power, but the cold, clinical businessman was gone. He looked down into her frantic eyes and saw the fierce, unyielding panic of a loving parent.

"What is her address?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping into a deep, authoritative command.

"What?" Claire sobbed.

"Give me her address, Claire. Now."

Ten minutes later, Adrian’s private medical helicopter was dispatched from a nearby private airfield, carrying his personal physician directly to Claire’s apartment in Queens. Less than forty-five minutes after the frantic phone call, the heavy iron gates of the estate swung open, and a sleek black SUV pulled up to the main entrance.

The door opened, and a paramedic carefully handed a small, blanket-wrapped girl into Claire's desperate arms. Lily was pale and sweaty, but her fever had already been brought down by intravenous fluids administered on the way.

"Mommy," Lily whimpered, burying her wet face into Claire's neck.

Claire sank to her knees right on the cold stone driveway, holding her daughter close, weeping in sheer relief. Behind her, Adrian stood quietly in the soft rain, watching the mother and child. Beside him, Noah, Caleb, and Miles peeked out from behind the massive oak front doors, their faces filled with awe and a sudden, quiet respect for the woman who was willing to lose everything for her child.
