Chapter 6 - The Unseen Threat

Sunday morning dawned bright and clear, but the tranquil atmosphere of the estate did not last. At two o'clock in the afternoon, four hours before Claire's contract was set to expire, red emergency lights began pulsing silently along the high stone ceilings of the hallway.
Adrian's head of security, a scarred man named Marco, burst into the study where Adrian and Claire were reviewing paperwork. "Boss, we have a breach," Marco said, his voice clipped and urgent. "The Valenti family found out you brought an unauthorized civilian doctor and vehicle through the gates yesterday. They traced the route and sent two armed strike teams to force a negotiation. They’re through the outer perimeter."
Claire’s blood ran cold. "Lily," she gasped.
"Marco, lock down the west wing and engage standard defense protocols," Adrian commanded instantly, his voice transforming back into the deadly leader of the Moretti syndicate. He pulled a concealed firearm from a hidden drawer beneath his desk, racked the slide with a terrifying efficiency, and looked straight at Claire. "Take the children to the saferoom behind the library. Do not open the door for anyone except me or Marco. Do you understand?"
"I understand," Claire said without a moment's hesitation.
She sprinted upstairs, gathering Lily from her room and grabbing Noah, Caleb, and Miles from the playroom. The triplets were pale, recognizing the siren sound that they had heard only once before in their young lives.
"Claire, are we gonna die?" Caleb whimpered, his usual tough exterior shattering completely as distant muffled gunfire echoed from the front courtyard.
"Nobody is going to die," Claire declared, her voice ringing with absolute certainty. She ushered all four children down a secret stairwell into the hidden reinforced panic room concealed behind a revolving bookshelf in the library.

As the heavy, five-inch-thick steel door sealed shut with a pneumatic hiss, the room was plunged into a quiet, subterranean calm. Lily began to cry, clutching Claire's waist. Noah, Caleb, and Miles crowded close around Claire, their small bodies trembling.
Claire sat down on the floor, pulling all four children into her arms, wrapping her sweater around them. "Listen to me," she whispered fiercely, looking each of the triplets in the eye. "Your father is out there, and he is the strongest man I have ever met. He will protect this house. But right in here, I am your shield. Nothing gets past me."
