Chapter 9 - A NEW DAWN

Two months later, the spring sun was shining brightly over Chicago, warming the city streets and melting the last remnants of winter ice.
At St. Jude Memorial Hospital, the seventh-floor NICU was no longer a fortress of fear and suspicion. The armed guards in tailored suits were gone, replaced by a sense of genuine peace and professional dedication.
In Suite 701, a small, elegant bassinet sat where the intimidating glass incubator had once been. Inside it, a healthy, chubby-cheeked baby boy with a full head of dark hair cooed softly, kicking his tiny legs in bright blue striped pajamas.
Weston Kade stood beside the bassinet, wearing a well-tailored navy suit instead of his usual mourning black. He gently rocked the bassinet, a soft, warm smile gracing his face—a look that the Chicago underworld would never have believed belonged to their feared ruler.
The door opened, and Priya walked in, carrying a clipboard and a warm cup of black coffee for Weston. She had recently been promoted to Head Nurse of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a position granted by the newly reformed hospital board in recognition of her extraordinary integrity and medical brilliance.
"How is our star patient doing today, Head Nurse Osei?" Weston asked, turning to look at her with deep affection in his dark eyes.
Priya smiled, stepping up beside him to check Owen’s charts. "Twelve pounds four ounces, Mr. Kade. He’s in the 85th percentile for weight gain. The doctors say his development is completely normal and he’s ready to go home."
Weston let out a long breath, a profound sense of relief washing over him. He turned fully toward Priya, his expression softening completely.
"Home," Weston repeated, testing the word as if it were something he hadn't experienced in a lifetime. "You know, Owen wouldn't even be here if it weren't for you, Priya. You saved his life. And... in a way, you saved mine, too."
Priya’s cheeks flushed slightly. She looked down at the charts, then back up into his intense, sincere eyes. "I just did my job, Weston. I couldn't let an innocent child suffer."
May you like
"It was more than a job," Weston said softly, reaching out to gently take her hand in his. His touch was warm, steady, and full of a quiet promise. "You brought light back into a very dark place. And I don't ever want to let you go."
Priya smiled, her fingers intertwining with his. "You won't have to."
