Chapter 8 - RETURN TO THE NICU

Dawn was beginning to break over the Chicago skyline, painting the grey clouds in streaks of pale gold and bruised purple, when Weston and Priya walked back through the heavy oak doors of Suite 701 at St. Jude Memorial.

The room felt completely different than it had hours ago. The suffocating weight of suspicion and impending doom had lifted, replaced by the quiet hum of healing.

Priya immediately rushed to Owen's incubator. She checked the infusion pump. The fresh, properly compounded TPN bag—retrieved from the secure emergency backup supply in the hospital's central pharmacy under her direct supervision—was dripping steadily into the infant's IV line.

She peered through the porthole, gently touching Owen’s tiny cheek.

"His color is already better," Priya whispered, a bright, genuine smile breaking across her face. "His temperature has stabilized, Weston. The metabolic suppressant is completely out of his system."

Weston stood beside her, looking down at his son. For the first time in weeks, the harsh lines around his mouth softened. He reached out, his massive, calloused index finger gently brushing against Owen’s tiny, perfectly formed fist.

To their amazement, Owen’s tiny fingers uncurled slightly and gripped Weston’s finger with surprising strength.

A single tear slipped from the corner of Weston’s eye, cutting a clean path down his granite cheek before he quickly brushed it away with the back of his hand.

"He's strong," Weston murmured, his voice thick with emotion. "Just like his mother."

"He's a fighter," Priya corrected gently, looking up at Weston with a warm, admiring smile. "And he had a father who never stopped watching over him."

The door to the suite clicked open softly, and a new senior neonatologist—brought in by the hospital board under direct federal oversight to replace the disgraced Dr. Voss—stepped inside with a respectful nod.

"Mr. Kade, Nurse Osei," the doctor said. "The federal agents have taken Dr. Voss and Marcus Moretti into custody. The hospital board has issued a full public retraction regarding Owen's diagnosis, and a complete restructuring of the administrative and pharmacy departments is underway. Your son is going to make a full recovery."

Weston nodded curtly. "Thank you. See that he gets private security detail twenty-four hours a day until he's discharged."

"Of course, Mr. Kade." The doctor bowed slightly and exited, closing the door quietly behind him.
