Part 10: Forever and Always

The night was quiet and peaceful inside the master bedroom of the Blackwood mansion.
Ethan had long since fallen asleep in his own bedroom down the hall, exhausted from a full day of playing in the sun. In the grand nursery next door, the crib was prepared and waiting for the new baby girl due in just three months—a little sister whom Ethan already proudly called his “best friend.”
Lily stood by the large bay window, looking out over the moonlit gardens.
Victor walked up behind her, wrapping his warm arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
“What are you thinking about?” he whispered into the quiet night.
“I was just thinking about the day we met,” Lily admitted softly, a gentle smile touching her lips. “The foyer. The cold marble. How terrified I was.”
Victor’s grip tightened slightly around her, a shadow of remorse crossing his features for a fraction of a second. “I’m sorry it took me so long to see what was happening right under my roof. I’m sorry you had to suffer through that alone.”
Lily turned around in his embrace, placing her hands against his chest and looking straight up into his gray eyes.
“Don't be sorry, Victor,” she said firmly. “If I hadn't been there, Ethan might not have survived. And if you hadn't walked through those doors when you did, I might not have found the strength to finally break free from my past.”
She reached up, cupping his jaw with her palm.
“We saved each other,” Lily whispered.
Victor covered her hand with his own, pressing a lingering kiss to her palm before pulling her into an embrace that felt like home, safety, and eternity all at once.

“Forever,” Victor murmured against her hair.
“Forever,” Lily replied, as the darkness outside gave way to a bright, beautiful dawn waiting just over the horizon.
