Chapter 9 - The Promise Kept

That evening, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold, Peter fired up the small backyard grill to cook burgers for dinner. The smell of grilling meat and sweet barbecue sauce drifted pleasantly across the yard.

Drew ran over, holding up a small wooden birdhouse they had built together in Peter’s workshop earlier that afternoon.

"Uncle Peter—can we hang it on the big oak tree tonight?" Drew asked, his dark eyes shining with excitement. "So the bluebirds have a safe place to sleep?"

Peter knelt down to Drew’s eye level, smiling warmly as he adjusted the boy’s collar.

"We can hang it right now, buddy," Peter said softly. "And remember what we talked about? You can call me whatever feels right to you."

Drew looked down for a second, a shy, happy smile spreading across his face. He looked back up into Peter’s eyes, the last lingering shadow of fear completely gone from his expression.

"Dad," Drew whispered, testing the word softly on his tongue. "Can we hang it, Dad?"

Peter felt a warm lump rise in his throat, and for a moment, he couldn't speak. He pulled Drew into a tight, fierce hug, resting his chin on the boy’s dark hair, feeling the strong, healthy heartbeat of a child who had walked through hell and made it back into the light.

"Yeah, buddy," Peter whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "Let's go hang it together."

Later that night, after the dishes were washed and the house had grown quiet, Peter tucked both children into their beds. Lily was fast asleep clutching her teddy bear, her breathing deep and even. Drew was lying under his dinosaur sheets, staring up at the glow-in-the-dark stars Peter had pasted across the ceiling.

As Peter turned to walk toward the door, a small hand caught the edge of his sleeve.

"Dad?" Drew asked quietly.

"I'm right here, son," Peter said, turning back with a gentle smile.

"Do you think Dad Aaron is watching us?"

Peter walked back over, sat on the edge of the mattress, and gently brushed the dark hair from Drew’s forehead.

"I know he is," Peter said softly, his voice steady and filled with absolute conviction. "And I know he’s smiling. Because his kids are safe, they’re loved, and they’re finally home."

Drew smiled, closed his eyes, and drifted off into a peaceful, dreamless sleep.
