Chapter 8 - Healing the Wounds

Three months later, the backyard of Peter’s house looked like a miniature construction zone mixed with a children's paradise. A brand-new wooden swing set stood proudly on the lush green grass, and a brightly colored slide caught the afternoon sun.

Drew was sitting on the back patio, his blue fiberglass cast having been removed just the week before. He was kicking his legs freely, laughing as he chased a bright red soccer ball across the lawn. His leg was fully healed, strong and steady.

Beside him sat Lily, now plump-cheeked, rosy-skinned, and wearing a yellow sunhat, clutching a stuffed teddy bear in her arms. She pointed at a butterfly fluttering near the flower bed and giggled, shouting, "Look, Drew! Butterfly!"

Peter stood on the back porch, leaning against the wooden railing with a mug of coffee in his hand, watching them with a deep, unbreakable sense of peace.

The transition hadn't been easy. There were nights during the first month when Drew would wake up screaming, terrified that the heavy basement door was about to close on him again. There were times when Lily would cling to Peter’s leg so tightly he couldn't take a step without carrying her.

But patience, unconditional love, and professional counseling had worked their slow, steady magic.

The nightmares had started to fade. The habit of hoarding food under his pillow had stopped once Drew realized that the pantry would never be locked, that the refrigerator would always be full, and that nobody would ever starve in this house again.

A soft knock sounded at the front door. Peter walked through the house and opened it to find Eleanor Vance standing on the porch, holding a final set of adoption and permanent custody finalization papers.

"Good afternoon, Peter," Eleanor said with a warm, professional smile. "I see the backyard inspection is going well."

"It's a little louder than my usual weekend woodworking projects," Peter smiled back, stepping aside to let her in, "but I wouldn't trade it for the world."

"Well, the final paperwork is all here," Eleanor said, placing the folder on the kitchen island. "Background checks, psychological evaluations, home stability reviews, and the probate transfer of Aaron’s estate into the children's trust. All that's left is your signature on the final adoption decree."

Peter picked up the pen. His hand didn't shake this time. He signed his name cleanly and firmly across the dotted line: Peter James Calder, Legal Guardian and Adoptive Father.

"It's official," Eleanor said softly, her eyes shining with emotion. "Congratulations, Peter. You're officially their dad in the eyes of the law, just like you've been in their hearts."

Through the kitchen window, Peter watched Drew help Lily climb up onto the wooden slide, holding her small hand steady and whispering words of encouragement just like an older brother should—not out of forced survival, but out of pure, unadulterated love.
