Chapter 3 - The Guardian’s Oath

The morning sun cast pale amber light across the linoleum floor of the hospital room. Peter hadn't slept. He had spent the night sitting in the uncomfortable chair, watching the rise and fall of the children's chests, listening to every slight murmur or whimper that escaped Drew's lips during restless, feverish dreams.

At 8:00 AM sharp, a knock sounded at the door. A woman with short auburn hair and a sensible tweed blazer entered, holding a thick manila folder.

"Mr. Peter Calder?" she asked, offering a warm, professional smile. "I'm Eleanor Vance—no relation to the detective, just a coincidence—from County Child Protective Services."

"Please, sit," Peter said, standing up and motioning to the chair. He looked tired, his eyes bloodshot, but his posture was rigid and unbroken. "Tell me what I need to do to keep them."

Eleanor opened the folder and placed a series of documents on the bedside table. "Mr. Calder, emergency kinship placement is designed to keep traumatized children within their biological family circle. Given the extreme nature of this case, our agency is fully backing your temporary custody petition. However, there is a legal process. We need to complete a home safety assessment, background checks, and financial verification."

"My house is three bedrooms, fully paid off, quiet neighborhood, five minutes from the elementary school," Peter rattled off immediately, pulling a binder from his canvas bag. "I’ve already printed out my last three years of tax returns, my employment records as a senior structural engineer, and my health insurance policy details. Here are my vaccination records and character references from my neighbors."

Eleanor blinked in surprise, looking down at the meticulously organized binder. Then, a genuine smile broke across her face. "You didn't waste any time."

"They crawled seven blocks on bleeding knees just to stay alive, Ms. Vance," Peter said, his voice thick with emotion as he glanced at Drew. "I’m not about to waste a single second now."

"Well, your thoroughness makes my job a lot easier," Eleanor said, signing the top form in the folder. "As of right now, the court has granted an emergency temporary custody order assigning you physical and legal guardianship of both Drew and Lily Calder. Reena’s legal counsel is attempting to file a motion for visitation, claiming this is all a misunderstanding, but the judge took one look at the police report from the basement and denied it outright."

"Good," Peter breathed out, a weight lifting off his chest that he hadn't fully realized he was carrying.

"There is one more thing," Eleanor added, lowering her voice slightly. "The children will need intensive trauma counseling. Drew especially. The psychological burden of protecting his baby sister at six years old is something most adults couldn't survive. He hasn't spoken a single word about what happened inside that house since he arrived here."

Just then, movement came from the bed. Drew’s eyelids fluttered open. For a second, a look of blind panic crossed his face as he stared at the unfamiliar hospital ceiling. Then, his head snapped to the side.

His eyes locked onto Peter.

"Uncle Peter?" the boy whispered, his voice cracked and dry.

Peter was by the side of the bed in a fraction of a second, gently taking Drew’s small, warm hand in his own. "I'm right here, buddy. I'm not going anywhere. I'm staying right here."

Drew looked over at Lily, who was beginning to stir, her little blonde curls catching the morning light. "Is she okay?"

May you like

"She’s wonderful," Peter said, his voice breaking. "She’s eating, she’s safe, and she’s sleeping soundly. And you are safe too, Drew. Nobody is ever going to lock you down there again. You have my word."

Drew let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension finally draining out of his small frame. He squeezed Peter’s finger with surprising strength, closing his eyes once more, not in fear, but in deep, unbreakable trust.
