Chapter 7 - The Verdict of Justice

Judge Harrison closed Aaron’s journal with a soft, deliberate thud that reverberated through the silent courtroom like a gavel strike. He looked directly down at Marcus Sterling, whose confident demeanor had completely dissolved into nervous sweat.
"Mr. Sterling," Judge Harrison said, his voice dangerously quiet. "You spoke of misunderstandings and grief-induced delusions. Would you care to explain how a six-year-old child scratching tally marks into a concrete basement floor while locked behind a steel deadbolt is a misunderstanding?"
Sterling swallowed hard, fumbling with his tie. "Your Honor, my client—"
"Your client is facing multiple felony indictments for aggravated child abuse, criminal confinement, and reckless endangerment," Judge Harrison interrupted coldly. "Furthermore, based on the documented pattern of systemic psychological torture, coercion, and blackmail directed at the late Aaron Calder, this court finds clear and convincing evidence that Reena Calder poses an immediate, catastrophic danger to any minor child in her vicinity."
Reena stood up abruptly, her composure completely shattering. "You can't do this! Those are my children! Aaron left everything to me! That house is mine!"
"Sit down, Mrs. Calder, or you will be removed by bailiffs in handcuffs," Judge Harrison ordered sharply. "Effective immediately, all parental rights, guardianship claims, and estate inheritance rights held by Reena Calder regarding minor children Drew and Lily Calder are hereby permanently and irrevocably terminated."
A collective sigh of relief seemed to sweep through the courtroom gallery.
"Furthermore," the judge continued, looking directly at Peter, "the petition for permanent legal and physical guardianship filed by Peter Calder is hereby granted in full. The court orders full child support and asset forfeiture from the estate of the late Aaron Calder to be transferred immediately into a protected trust fund managed solely by Peter Calder for the care, education, and medical rehabilitation of Drew and Lily Calder."
Reena began to weep hysterically, not out of sorrow, but out of rage and defeat, as two bailiffs stepped forward, placed her in handcuffs, and led her out of the courtroom through the side exit. Her defense attorney packed his briefcase in frantic, jittery silence and hurried out behind them.
Judge Harrison looked down from the bench, his stern expression softening slightly as he met Peter’s eyes.

"Mr. Calder," the judge said quietly. "You gave your brother's children a lifeline. Now it's your job to give them a childhood."
"Yes, Your Honor," Peter replied, his voice thick with emotion as he nodded deeply. "I won't let them down."
