Chapter 9 - A New Chapter

Three months later, the legal storm had settled into a quiet, peaceful rhythm. Mark’s trial was pending, with overwhelming evidence guaranteeing a lengthy prison sentence for domestic abuse, child endangerment, and financial fraud. Melissa had successfully transitioned into a remote consulting role, allowing her to work from home and be fully present for Lily. The apartment she rented was always filled with the sounds of laughter, children's music, and the smell of home-cooked meals.
Every Tuesday and Thursday evening, Lily came over to my apartment for "Chef Night." We would put on mismatched aprons, knead pizza dough, chop vegetables, and bake cookies until flour covered every square inch of the kitchen counters.

"Yes, buddy?"
"Am I allowed to have a second helping of garlic bread?"
I smiled, my heart swelling with warmth as I slid the basket across the table toward her.

"In this house, Lily? You can have as much as you want. Always."
She beamed, grabbed a piece of garlic bread with both hands, and took a huge, happy bite. Across the table, Melissa smiled, raising her glass of sparkling cider in a silent toast to brighter days, unbreakable family bonds, and a future filled with endless light.
