Chapter 6 - The Advocacy Center

Twenty minutes later, a discreet unmarked black SUV was waiting downstairs. Claire was standing by the rear door, wearing a sharp grey blazer and holding a folder filled with legal documents.
I wrapped Lily in a warm jacket, put her pink backpack over her shoulders, and carried her down the back service stairs to avoid any chance of running into Mark or curious neighbors. When she saw Claire, she shrank back slightly, but Claire dropped to one knee with a warm, comforting smile that instantly melted the tension.
"Hi, Lily," Claire said softly, holding up a small, cheerful coloring book. "My name is Claire. I'm a friend of Daniel's, and we're going to go to a very special, safe place where you can draw, play, and tell us all about how brave you've been."
Lily looked up at me, seeking permission. I nodded, smiling reassuringly. "She's a good friend, buddy. I'll be right there with you every single second."
The drive to the county child advocacy center was quiet. Inside the facility, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the sterile, frightening rooms of a police station. The walls were painted in soft pastel blues and yellows, decorated with friendly cartoon murals, stuffed animals, and shelves overflowing with toys.
A gentle, licensed child psychologist named Dr. Sarah greeted us. She had kind eyes and spoke in a soothing, melodic voice that immediately put Lily at ease.
For the next two hours, while Lily sat at a low wooden table drawing pictures with a rainbow of unbroken crayons under Dr. Sarah's compassionate guidance, the fragments of her nightmare came to light. With every stroke of purple and yellow pastel, she spoke about the rules Mark had set: the quiet hours, the locked pantry doors, the punishments disguised as "lessons," and the way her mother had been slowly worn down, convinced that she was failing as a parent.

Dr. Sarah recorded the session professionally, her notes painting a devastating portrait of systematic psychological and physical abuse. When Lily finished her drawing—a bright, beautiful picture of herself and me eating pancakes under a sunny sky—she looked up and asked the question that broke all our hearts.
"Can I stay with Daniel forever?"
