Chapter 7 - Melissa's Return

While Lily rested in a comfortable, quiet recovery room with a puzzle and her stuffed rabbit, my phone buzzed. It was an encrypted video call from Claire’s associate in Denver.

I accepted the call, stepping out into a quiet hallway. On the screen was a private airport conference room. Sitting at the center table was Melissa, looking exhausted, disheveled, and completely shattered. Her hair was messy, dark circles bruised beneath her eyes, and her hands shook as she clutched a Styrofoam cup of coffee.

Across from her sat a local social worker and a female detective in plainclothes.

"Daniel?" Melissa whispered, her voice cracking the moment she saw my face on the tablet screen. "Daniel, what is going on? A detective pulled me off my connecting flight. They... they said horrible things about Mark. They said Lily was hurt."

I looked at my sister, feeling a complicated mix of fierce anger and profound pity.

"Melissa, look at me," I said, keeping my voice steady and firm. "Mark has been starving her. He locked her in her room. He bruised her wrists. He told her she wasn't allowed to eat unless she was a 'good girl'."

Melissa gasped, pressing both hands over her mouth as tears spilled down her cheeks. "No... no, that's not true. Mark loves us. He said Lily was just acting out because of separation anxiety..."

"He came to my apartment this morning trying to kidnap her back," I interrupted, showing her a direct photo of the bruised wrist on the screen. "Look at the evidence, Melissa. He played you just like he played everyone else. He isolated you, he terrorized your daughter, and if you go back to him, you are choosing him over your own flesh and blood."

The detective slid a stack of legal papers across the table toward Melissa.

"Mrs. Reynolds, your husband’s real estate office was raided an hour ago based on financial fraud warrants, and a search of your home uncovered hidden security cameras monitoring every room in the house," the detective stated calmly. "An emergency restraining order has been issued. Mark has been arrested."

Melissa stared at the documents, her entire world crumbling around her. For a terrifying second, I feared she would defend him out of fear or habit. But then she looked down at the photograph of Lily's bruised wrist, and something inside her broke permanently.

She wept—not the defensive crying of an enabler, but the gut-wrenching grief of a mother waking up from a nightmare.

"Bring my baby back to me," Melissa sobbed into her hands. "Please... bring my baby home."
