Chapter 5 - The Safe House Shift

As soon as Mark’s footsteps faded down the stairwell, I locked the deadbolt, threw the security chain, and let out a long, shaky breath. I turned around to find Lily standing in the middle of the living room, trembling so hard she could barely hold her stuffed rabbit.
I rushed over, dropping to one knee in front of her.
"Hey, hey, look at me," I said gently, taking her small, cold hands in mine. "He's gone. He can't hurt you. You are safe here. I promise you, on my life, he will never touch you again."
She threw her arms around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder. She didn't cry this time; she just clung to me with a desperate, crushing grip, as if letting go meant disappearing into thin air.
My phone rang inside my pocket. Keeping one arm securely around Lily, I pulled it out with my free hand. It was Claire.
"Daniel, are you okay? My contact at the precinct said Mark was spotted heading toward your building," Claire said rapidly.
"He just left," I replied, smoothing Lily's hair. "He tried to take her. He threatened me."
"That changes everything," Claire said, her voice dropping into high gear. "That’s attempted abduction and intimidation. We don't have to wait until Melissa's conference ends. I just secured an emergency judicial pickup order from Judge Harrison. I have two child welfare officers and a sheriff's deputy standing by. We are moving Lily to a secure, neutral child advocacy center right now."
"What about Melissa?" I asked.

"The authorities are intercepting her flight the moment it lands in Denver. Social services and local law enforcement will sit down with her away from Mark's influence, show her the evidence, and give her a chance to protect her daughter voluntarily. If she cooperates, she gets safety and support. If she denies it or covers for him..." Claire paused, the weight of her words hanging heavily in the air. "Well, then she loses custody too."
"Do it," I said firmly. "We're ready."
