Chapter 8 - The Trial and Testimony

The preliminary hearing arrived four months later. The courtroom was cold and formal, filled with the murmurs of lawyers and reporters. Richard sat at the defense table, flanked by two high-priced attorneys who looked far less confident than they had on day one. They tried to argue that the video was taken out of context and that Megan had provoked the physical altercation.
Then came Sophie’s turn to take the stand.
At twelve years old, Sophie was terrified of speaking in a courtroom. But as her aunt, I held her hand all the way to the witness box, whispering words of courage. When the prosecutor asked her to recount what she saw from the stairs that night, Sophie spoke clearly, her voice echoing through the quiet room.
“Grandpa Richard was screaming at Grandma,” Sophie testified, looking directly at the judge with incredible maturity. “He shoved my mom into the kitchen island. She screamed. Then he grabbed her by the throat. I recorded it because I knew if I didn't, nobody would believe us.”
The defense attorney tried to cross-examine her, attempting to rattle a twelve-year-old girl, but Sophie held her ground with unwavering truth.
When the four-minute video was played on the courtroom monitors, the entire room fell into a dead silence. You could hear Richard’s voice booming through the speakers, followed by the sickening thud of Megan hitting the counter and her plea: I scratched you because you grabbed my throat.
The judge’s expression grew darker with every second of footage.

When it was Megan’s turn to testify, she spoke not with fear, but with the fierce power of a survivor. She detailed years of emotional abuse, financial isolation, and the terrifying night her wrist was broken.
The defense’s case crumbled in real-time. Facing overwhelming video evidence, witness testimony, and mounting financial crimes charges, Richard’s lawyers approached the prosecutor during a recess with a plea deal proposal.
