Chapter 3 - The Safe House Strategy

We drove straight to an all-night diner three miles away from the hospital. Over a booth covered in red vinyl, I ordered a hot chocolate for Sophie and a black coffee for myself. We needed a plan, and we needed it fast.

“Sophie, does your mom have any money of her own, or does Richard control everything?” I asked, sketching out a timeline on a paper napkin.

“Grandpa Richard handles all the money,” Sophie whispered, stirring her drink with a spoon. “Mom tried to get a part-time job last year at the bookstore, but he said it was a waste of time and that she couldn't handle it. He checks her phone, too. That’s why she didn't call the police tonight. He would have found out.”

My heart ached for Megan. We had grown apart over the last five years after she married Richard—a wealthy, charismatic real estate developer who initially charmed the entire family. But slowly, subtly, Richard had isolated Megan from her friends, controlled her movements, and eroded her self-esteem. Mom had fallen right under his spell, choosing denial over disruption because she couldn't bear the shame of a broken marriage.

My phone buzzed on the table. It was a text message from Megan: Claire, where did you go? Mom is furious. Please don't call the police. Richard says he'll press charges against me for scratching him if we make a big deal out of this.

I stared at the screen in absolute disbelief. Richard was turning the tables, threatening his own victim with legal retaliation.

I am not going to let him intimidate you, I texted back. I have the video Sophie took. I am outside. Come out to my car right now, or I am walking back into that hospital with a security guard and a police officer.

Ten minutes passed. The diner clock ticked loudly against the wall. Sophie held her breath, her eyes glued to the glass door.

Finally, the bell above the door chimed. Megan hurried in, her coat clutched tightly around her, her left arm immobilised in a rigid medical cast. Her eyes darted around the diner before she spotted us in the back booth and practically ran over.

“Are you crazy?” Megan whispered frantically as she slid into the booth next to Sophie. “Richard and Mom are looking everywhere for you. If he finds out you have that video—”

“He’s not going to find out because we are going to the police station tonight,” I interrupted, sliding my coffee aside. “Megan, look at your wrist. Look at your daughter. Are you going to wait until he puts you in the ICU before you say enough is enough?”

May you like

Megan burst into quiet tears, burying her face in her good hand. “I’m trapped, Claire. You don't know what he's like when no one is watching. He threatened to take Sophie away from me. He has lawyers, he has money... I have nothing.”

“You have me,” I said firmly, taking her cold hand. “And we have video evidence of him assaulting you. That changes everything.”
