Chapter 6 - The Law Steps In

“Columbus Police Department. We received a domestic violence call and a live digital evidence submission,” the lead officer announced, his voice echoing authoritatively through the spacious hallway.

Richard froze mid-stride, his face draining of color. The slick, powerful real estate developer dissolved instantly into a panicked man realizing his empire of control had just collapsed.

“Officer, there’s been a misunderstanding,” Richard stammered, his hands immediately raising in a defensive, placating gesture. “My sister-in-law here is trespassing, and—and my wife had an accidental fall in the kitchen. Everything is fine.”

“It’s not fine, Officer,” I stepped forward, pulling out my phone and showing them the reference code for the cloud storage link. “My niece recorded him assaulting my sister last night, breaking her wrist and trying to choke her. Furthermore, he threatened her just now in front of witnesses.”

The officer nodded grimly, glancing at Megan’s cast and then at the fresh scratches on Richard’s face. He turned to his partner. “Call for backup and secure the premises.”

Mom burst into tears, collapsing onto the velvet foyer bench. “No, no, please! This is a mistake! You can't take him!”

“Mrs. Hale, step back,” the second officer instructed gently, guiding my mother away.

Richard was placed in handcuffs within minutes. As they led him toward the front door, he glared at Megan and me with pure venom. “You’ll pay for this, Megan. You’ll never see a dime of my money. I’ll make sure you lose everything in the divorce.”

“I’d rather have nothing than live another day with you,” Megan said, her voice shaking slightly, but her head held high.

As the police cruiser pulled out of the driveway with Richard inside, a heavy, profound weight seemed to lift off the entire house. Megan let out a long, ragged breath, sliding down the wall into a seated position. Sophie ran over and hugged her tight, crying tears of relief.
