Chapter 9 - A New Beginning
Six months later, the neighborhood had transformed remarkably.
Using the funds recovered from the historical gold coins in accordance with Arthur Vance’s original deed, the town converted the abandoned Vance Manor property into a beautiful neighborhood park and botanical garden. The unsafe structures were cleared, replaced by lush green lawns, walking paths, and a vibrant children’s playground.
Thomas Vance, completing his court-mandated community service, worked alongside town volunteers to plant flowerbeds and build wooden benches for the park. He had secured a stable job with the local historical society, using his extensive knowledge of the area's architecture to help restore historic homes safely.
One sunny Saturday afternoon, our family walked down the street to the grand opening of the new Vance Community Park.
Lily ran straight toward the swing sets, her laughter echoing in the warm summer air.
Thomas was standing near the entrance, holding a wooden sign he had carved for the park garden. When he saw us approach, he stepped forward hesitantly, holding his hands behind his back.
"Mr. and Mrs. Miller," Thomas said respectfully, taking off his hat. "I... I wanted to give something to Lily."

He handed us a small, beautifully polished wooden box crafted from the reclaimed pine of the old Vance Manor. Inside was an old brass detective badge from the 1930s that had been recovered during the park's excavation.
"For the smartest detective in town," Thomas said with a warm, genuine smile. "I can never thank you enough for your grace and forgiveness."
