Chapter 5 - The Intruder

While the police began searching the dilapidated Vance Manor, Daniel and I took immediate action to secure our home. We hired a structural contractor who specialized in historical renovations to permanently seal the hatch.

By late afternoon, heavy steel plates were bolted over the opening, covered by thick insulation, and topped with solid hardwood tongue-and-groove flooring. The hole was completely gone, restored to solid wood.

However, peace of mind did not return so easily.

That night, Lily slept between Daniel and me in our king-sized bed. The house was dead quiet. Every minor creak of the timber sent a jolt of adrenaline through my system.

At 2:45 A.M., my phone vibrated again.

My heart stopped. I opened the security app. The camera in Lily’s empty bedroom was still live.

The room was vacant. The bed was neatly made. But on the screen, the door handle of Lily’s bedroom closet began to slowly turn.

My breath hitched. The tunnel wasn't the only way in.

I shoved Daniel awake. "Dan! Someone is in her room right now!"

Daniel didn't hesitate. He grabbed the heavy flashlight off the nightstand and bolted down the hall. I grabbed my phone, dialed 911, and followed right behind him.

Daniel threw open Lily's bedroom door and slammed his hand onto the light switch. The bright overhead light flooded the room.

The closet door swung wide open. Standing inside, shielding his eyes from the sudden glare, was a gaunt man in his late fifties, wearing a worn dark jacket and covered in dust and drywall debris.

"Don't come any closer!" Daniel yelled, holding the heavy flashlight like a weapon. "The police are on their way!"

The man didn't attack. Instead, he dropped a small canvas bag onto the floor and held up his hands, trembling.

"I'm sorry," the man stammered, his voice hoarse and raspy. "I'm sorry... I wasn't trying to hurt anyone. I was looking for the box!"
