Chapter 8 - Healing and Closure

With the tunnel permanently filled with solid concrete poured by city engineers, the physical threat was entirely eliminated. But the psychological impact on our family needed time to heal.

Lily still felt uneasy in her bedroom. The memory of the "tight bed" remained in her young mind, making bedtime a source of anxiety.

To help her feel safe and in control again, Daniel and I decided to let her redesign her room completely. We let her pick out new paint colors—a bright, cheerful mint green—along with new curtains and a brand-new bed frame elevated on high, sturdy legs where the floor beneath was completely open, bright, and easy to see.

We made a fun family game out of checking under the bed every night.

"Is there anything under here?" Daniel would dramatically ask, shining a bright pink flashlight under the bed.

"Just my slippers!" Lily would giggle.

We also sat down with Lily and explained the truth in a gentle, age-appropriate way. We told her that an old man was searching for his lost family treasure chest under the ground, and that because she had been so smart and brave in telling us her bed felt "tight," she had helped solve an ancient mystery that had been hidden for almost a hundred years.

"So I'm a detective?" Lily asked, her eyes shining with pride.

"The best detective in the world," I smiled, kissing her forehead.
