Chapter 6 - Shadows from the Past

Just as stability seemed to return to the Whitaker home, a shadow from the past threatened to disrupt it. Jonathan’s former mother-in-law, Victoria Vance, arrived unexpectedly from New York.

Victoria was a woman of rigid high-society standards who had never approved of Jonathan’s modest background before his tech empire took off, nor did she approve of a young, middle-class domestic worker living in the mansion.

"Jonathan, this is unacceptable," Victoria declared sharply over dinner, casting a disgusted glare at Nora as she served soup. "A twenty-five-year-old student living here? The press will have a field day. She’s taking advantage of your vulnerability and these poor girls!"

Hazel stood up from her chair, slamming her hands on the table. "Don't talk about Nora like that, Grandmother! She’s the only one who actually cared about us when dad was hiding in his office!"

"Hazel! Mind your manners!" Victoria snapped.

Jonathan stood up slowly, his tall frame casting a long shadow across the room. The timid, grieving man was gone. "Victoria," Jonathan said with quiet authority. "Nora has brought life back into this home. You are welcome as a guest, but you will respect the person who saved my daughters."

That night, Nora sat in her small staff bedroom, packing her backpack. She knew Victoria’s presence would create unnecessary conflict, and she didn't want to be the cause of family tension. But as she opened her door, she found Jonathan standing in the hallway.

"Don't go," he said softly, his eyes filled with an intensity she had never seen before. "Please, Nora. This house isn't a home without you."
