Chapter 5 - The Unspoken Truths

Over the next three weeks, the dynamic inside the Whitaker mansion shifted fundamentally. Nora wasn't hired as a nanny, but she became the anchor the family desperately lacked.

She established gentle routines. She helped the twins, Cora and Mae, express their confusion through finger painting instead of smearing grease on the walls. She sat with June in the dark until she fell asleep, holding her hand so she knew she was safe. She taught Brooke how to braid her remaining hair into stylish crowns that covered the missing patches.

Jonathan began coming home earlier from his tech firm. Instead of locking himself in his third-floor office, he started sitting at the kitchen island while Nora prepared dinner.

"They talk to you," Jonathan said one evening, watching through the glass door as Nora played tag with Lena and Ivy in the garden. "They haven't laughed like that in two years."

"They didn't need discipline, Mr. Whitaker," Nora replied, wiping down the kitchen counter. "They needed permission to be sad without being judged, and permission to be happy without feeling like they were betraying their mother."

Jonathan looked at Nora. He noticed the soft tired lines under her eyes, her dedication, her unwavering strength. "You're studying child psychology, aren't you? Steven told me."

"Yes," Nora smiled modestly. "I have my final exams coming up next month."

"You’re remarkable, Nora," Jonathan said, his voice dropping an octave, filled with genuine warmth. "I don't know what we would have done if you hadn't walked through those gates."
