Chapter 7 - The Fallout and the Apology

The dining room erupted into chaos. Aunt Clara slammed her napkin onto the table, glaring at my mother with absolute disgust. "I cannot believe you, Margaret. All these years, you told us Sarah was the difficult one. You drove away my niece with your lies! And you stole from the estate?"
Uncle Robert stood up, pointing a shaking finger at Thomas. "If these audits are true, we are going to court tomorrow morning. You’ve been stealing our shares, Thomas. You’re a thief."
My mother tried to recover, her voice rising to a frantic, shrill shriek. "Don't listen to them! They are tearing this family apart over an outsider! Thomas, do something! Call the police!"
"Call the police for what, Mother?" Thomas muttered miserably, slumped down into a chair, completely defeated as he realized his financial crimes were fully exposed. "There’s nothing we can do. They have everything."
I walked over to Sarah, who was standing quietly near the doorway, her hand linked with Clara's. I held out my hand to her, and she took it, her fingers warm and steady.
"We are leaving," I announced to the room, looking around at the fractured pieces of my childhood. "The house, the business, the toxic legacy—you can keep it all, Mother. We don't want a single penny of your stolen money. But if you ever come near my wife or my daughter again, the next documents you receive won't be financial audits. They will be criminal indictments."
As we walked out the front doors for the final time, I heard my mother screaming curses behind us, her voice echoing into the empty night. But for the first time in my life, her screams had no power over me.
We climbed into the car. Little Lily was fast asleep in the back seat, her breathing peaceful and unburdened. Sarah leaned her head back against the passenger seat, closing her eyes. A soft, genuine smile touched the corners of her lips—a smile I hadn't seen in years.
"Are you okay?" I asked softly, starting the engine.
May you like
Sarah turned to me, reaching out to place her hand gently over mine on the gear shift. "I’m better than okay, Mark. For the first time, I feel completely safe."
We drove away from the estate, leaving the ghosts of the past locked firmly behind us, ready to build a new life built entirely on truth, love, and unwavering trust.
