Chapter 6 - The Unmasking

"Have you all lost your minds?" my brother Thomas barked, slamming his glass down onto the side table so hard the amber liquid splashed over the rim. He stepped up beside our mother, puffing out his chest. "How dare you speak to our mother like that in her own house? Mark, your wife has clearly dragged you down into her delusion, and you're letting her—"
"Shut up, Thomas," I said, turning my gaze sharply toward my brother. The look in my eyes must have been terrifying, because Thomas actually swallowed hard and stepped back.
"For thirty years," I began, my voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings of the living room, "I believed this family was built on love, loyalty, and mutual respect. I thought mother was just... passionate. I thought Thomas was just protective. I spent my entire adult life apologizing for you both, forcing my wife to bend over backward to earn an approval that you never, ever intended to give her."
My mother regained her composure, her lips curling into a bitter, venomous sneer. "Oh, please. Spare us the dramatic monologue, Mark. The woman is unhinged. She broke my heirloom, she disrespects the family name, and now she’s brainwashing you into turning against your own flesh and blood. Look at her—she's a parasite."
"Enough!" I roared, the sound snapping through the room like a whip.
I reached into my jacket pocket, pulled out a portable projector I had borrowed from Marcus’s office, and tossed it onto the center of the dining table. With a quick tap on my phone, I connected it to the large smart TV mounted on the living room wall.
The screen flickered to life. Instead of home movies, it displayed a clear, high-resolution document: The Corporate Audit Report of Vance Enterprises, Vol. 1.
"What is this nonsense?" Thomas muttered, his face draining of color.
"This," I said calmly, walking toward the screen, "is a complete forensic audit of the family trust and the corporate accounts you and Mother have been managing, Thomas. It details every single unauthorized withdrawal, every hidden asset transfer, and every penny of my father’s estate that you two siphoned off over the past decade, leaving the other siblings completely cut out of our rightful inheritance."
Gasps erupted around the dining table. Aunt Clara and Uncle Robert exchanged horrified looks, turning their gaze toward my mother and brother.
"That's a lie! Fabricated documents!" my mother shrieked, her hands trembling as she grabbed the edge of the table. "Mark is trying to ruin us because of this... this manipulative woman he married!"
"That's not all," I said, pulling out the flash drive and plugging it into a secondary port.
Instantly, audio clips began to play through the high-end sound system. It was my mother’s voice, clear as day, broadcasted across the room for every relative to hear.
"We just need to push Sarah to the edge," the audio recording of my mother's voice rang out through the speakers. "If we make her look crazy enough, Mark will divorce her, and we can take full custody of little Lily. She doesn't belong in our bloodline..."
The room plunged into an absolute, suffocating silence.
My mother stood frozen, the color completely draining from her face, leaving her looking old, frail, and monstrous all at once. Thomas looked like he wanted to sink right through the hardwood floor. Several relatives stood up from the table, backing away from my mother and brother as if they were plague victims.

"You... you recorded me?" my mother whispered, her voice cracking with pure venom and disbelief.
"No, Mother," I said, looking down at her with a heavy, broken heart. "Clara recorded you. And Marcus compiled the rest. You didn't just break Sarah’s heart; you tried to destroy her soul. And you used all of us to do it."
