Chapter 1 - The Incident at the House

I thought I knew exactly what had happened.
My wife had asked my sister-in-law to help retrieve her late mother's silver hairpin after it was accidentally thrown into the kitchen trash.
Before anyone could react...
My mother stormed across the room.
She grabbed my wife's arm so hard the hairpin fell back into the garbage.
"You've embarrassed this family long enough," she shouted.
The room went silent.
Our six-year-old daughter burst into tears.
She wrapped both arms around her mother and cried,
"Please don't hurt Mommy!"
I pulled them apart before anyone else was injured.
My mother insisted my wife had started the argument.
My brother nodded without saying a word.
Several relatives quietly looked away.
On the drive home, my wife barely spoke.
She simply held the damaged hairpin in her hands.
"My mother gave this to me the week before she died," she whispered.
"I wasn't crying because of the hairpin."
"I was crying because no one believes me anymore."
The next morning I decided to ask my sister-in-law what had really happened.
I expected a simple explanation.
Instead...
She handed me a flash drive.

"You deserve to know what they've been hiding," she said quietly.
"What you're about to see didn't begin yesterday."
