Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

Five years passed in the blink of an eye.

The wounds of the past had long since faded into faint scars, serving as reminders of how close we had come to losing everything, and how hard we had fought to reclaim our happiness.

My mother’s estate had eventually been settled through the courts, and whatever remained after legal fees and restitution was quietly distributed among the other relatives, while my mother chose to live out her days in bitter isolation, a prisoner of her own making. Thomas had moved out of state, trying to rebuild his reputation in a new city, though we never heard from him again. We didn't harbor anger toward them anymore; we simply felt a quiet, distant indifference. They were ghosts of a life we had successfully left behind.

Today, our home was filled with the sweet chaos of a growing family. Sarah and I had welcomed a baby boy, Leo, who was now three years old and possessed an infectious, sunny disposition that kept us constantly on our toes.

On a crisp, golden Sunday afternoon, we hosted a massive backyard celebration for Sarah’s birthday. Our backyard was decked out with twinkling string lights, long wooden tables laden with food, and the joyful chatter of dozens of close friends who had become our true support system.

Sarah stood near the garden bed, wearing a flowing summer dress, her dark hair half-up, secured perfectly by her late mother's silver hairpin. The silver caught the afternoon sunlight, glowing with timeless elegance.

I walked up behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist and resting my chin gently on her shoulder, breathing in the familiar scent of lavender and vanilla.

"You look breathtaking," I whispered into her ear.

Sarah smiled, turning around in my embrace to wrap her arms around my neck. "Even after all these years, you still say that."

"Because it's true every single day," I replied, pressing a gentle kiss to her lips.

Across the lawn, Lily—now eleven years old—was teaching little Leo how to blow bubbles, their gleeful shrieks echoing into the bright blue sky. Clara walked over, handing us both a glass of sparkling cider with a wink.

"To love, truth, and happily ever after," Clara toasted, lifting her glass.

"To happily ever after," Sarah and I echoed together, our glasses clinking softly in the warm autumn breeze.

I looked around at the laughter, the warmth, and the unshakable peace we had built with our own hands. We had stared into the darkest corners of family betrayal, walked through the fire, and come out the other side stronger, wiser, and more deeply in love than ever before. The past could no longer touch us. Our story was ours to write now, and it was the most beautiful ending I could have ever imagined.
