Chapter 5 - The Midnight Phantom

At 9:30 PM, the rain returned with violent intensity, lashing against the floor-to-ceiling glass walls of the living room.
Emma was safely tucked in her room, listening to audiobook stories through noise-canceling headphones, blissfully unaware of the trap unfolding downstairs.
Nathan walked into the living room carrying a silver tray. On it sat a porcelain teacup steaming with lavender-scented tea. His hands were completely steady. He was a stone-cold killer in a tailored Italian suit.
"Here you go, Audrey," he said, placing the cup on the coffee table in front of me. "Drink it all while it's warm. It will help you sleep soundly."
"Thank you, darling," I said, picking up the cup.
I brought the cup to my lips, letting the steam warm my face. I could smell the faint, bitter metallic tang beneath the lavender fragrance—scopolamine mixed with high-potency liquid benzodiazepines. A dose strong enough to incapacitate a person within minutes, rendering them unable to resist or remember.
I pretended to take a long sip.
Using a tiny silicone pouch concealed inside my high-collared sweater sleeve, I subtly diverted the liquid away from my mouth as I tilted the cup. To anyone watching, it looked like I had swallowed a third of the cup.
"It's very good," I murmured, leaning my head back against the sofa cushions and closing my eyes.
Nathan stood over me, watching like a hawk. Within ten minutes, I began to slur my words.
"Nathan... I feel... so dizzy..." I gasped, letting my eyes roll back slightly.
"Just relax, Audrey," he whispered, his voice stripped of all affection, cold and detached. "Let it happen."
I let my arm drop to my side, allowing the empty teacup to fall onto the rug. I closed my eyes completely, slowing my breathing into a deep, unconscious rhythm.
Nathan waited two full minutes to be certain. Then, I heard the faint rustle of his phone.
"She's out," Nathan said into the speakerphone. "Come inside."
The front door unlocked. High heels clicked softly across the white marble foyer.
"Is it done?" asked a woman's voice. Victoria Vance.
"She's completely unconscious," Nathan replied. "Help me carry her to the top of the stairs. We'll drop her from the landing. The impact on the marble floor will break her neck instantly. Dr. Latham is on standby to sign off on the accidental death report due to toxic drug overdose."
"Perfect," Victoria chuckled softly. "The board meeting is scheduled for 10:00 AM tomorrow. Once the press hears about your tragic loss, no one will dare ask for an immediate audit. The company is ours, Nathan."
I felt Nathan’s strong hands grip under my arms, while Victoria lifted my feet. They hauled my body up the grand curved staircase, stepping carefully onto the top landing.
They positioned me right at the edge of the drop.
"Any last words for your wife, Nathan?" Victoria sneered gently.
"Goodbye, Audrey," Nathan whispered. "You were useful while it lasted."
May you like
They leaned forward to push me off the ledge.
At that exact second, I opened my eyes wide, grabbed Nathan’s lapels with both hands, and slammed my heels firm against the floorboards.
