Chapter 10 - A Palette of Light
Three years later.
The afternoon sun beamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of our warm craftsman home in Kirkland. The air was filled with the sweet fragrance of blooming lavender from the garden—a scent that no longer brought back dark memories, but now symbolized peace and healing.
I sat at my desk, reviewing our annual corporate charitable foundation reports. Aegis Logistics had just funded a fifty-million-dollar endowment dedicated to improving child welfare and orphanages across Montana, ensuring that children like Emma would always be protected and heard.
"Mommy! Look what I made today!"
Emma came running into the sunlit living room, holding up a large canvas sheet fresh from her art class.
She was ten years old now—healthy, confident, top of her class, and glowing with the joy of a child who knew she was unconditionally loved.
I set my papers aside and took the canvas into my hands.
There were no stairs. There were no dark storms. There were no faceless people or broken teacups.
On the canvas was a vivid, breathtaking painting of a golden beach under a radiant sun. In the center stood two figures—a woman with long brown hair in an elegant dress, and a young girl holding a paintbrush. They were holding hands under a magnificent rainbow stretching across a clear blue sky.
At the bottom of the canvas, written in neat, gold letters, were the words:
OUR HAPPY EVER AFTER.
I felt a warm tear slide down my cheek—not a tear of grief or anger, but a tear of profound, unshakeable happiness.
"Do you like it, Mommy?" Emma asked, looking up at me with bright, sparkling eyes.
"I don't like it, Emma," I whispered softly, pulling her close into a warm, loving embrace. "I love it. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen."
Together, we hung the painting on the center wall above the fireplace, where the warm light of the afternoon sun illuminated it for the entire world to see.
