Six months later, the spring sun poured through the wide glass windows of our new home—a cozy, beautiful house near the coast where the sound of the waves replaced the toxic whispers of the past.
Emiliano was running across the lawn, chasing a red soccer ball with a laugh so bright and carefree it felt like music. He was taller now, his cheeks full and rosy, his little red sneakers scuffed from actual playground adventures. He didn't crawl anymore; he ran, his small arms outstretched toward the future.
I stood on the porch with a cup of coffee in hand, watching him play while Dana sat in the patio chair beside me, reviewing a final document finalizing my complete corporate exit and my new venture as an independent consultant—one that allowed me to work from home and never miss another bedtime.
"You look different, Mariana," Dana remarked, taking a sip of her tea. "Lighter."
