Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

Three weeks later, the legal battle shifted from an emergency scramble to a methodical, unyielding dismantling of Rodrigo’s fabricated life.
I had rented a quiet, sunlit apartment overlooking a park, filled with soft carpets, bright windows, and thousands of toys. Emiliano had slowly begun to speak again. His first full sentence, whispered on a Tuesday morning while we were watching the sparrows outside the window, was simple: "Mommy, can we stay here?"
My mother had moved in to help, and under her warm cooking and our constant, patient affection, the haunted look in Emiliano's eyes began to fade, replaced by the bright, curious gaze typical of a four-year-old boy.
The preliminary custody hearing took place on a crisp autumn morning. The courthouse steps were swarming with reporters—news of the prominent architect whose neglected child had been rescued by his globe-trotting corporate executive mother had leaked to the tabloids, turning Rodrigo's pristine social standing into public ash.

I walked up the granite stairs hand-in-hand with Dana Price. Inside the courtroom, Rodrigo looked a decade older. His bespoke suit was wrinkled, his hair unstyled, and his usual arrogance had completely evaporated. Teresa sat two rows behind him, glaring daggers at the back of my head, while Paulina was nowhere to be found—having packed her bags and left Rodrigo the moment his bank accounts were frozen by the court.
When the judge entered, the room fell into absolute silence.
