Chapter 3 - The Arrival

The heavy oak front door shuddered under a sharp, authoritative knock exactly four minutes later. No one moved. Teresa stood frozen by the couch, her knuckles white against the velvet upholstery, while Paulina rocked a now-wailing Bruno as if his cries could somehow drown out the reality waiting outside.

Rodrigo stared at the door handle, his chest rising and falling in shallow, jagged gasps. "Open it and you'll never see a dime of the settlement," he whispered fiercely, leaning in so only I could hear. "I will bleed you dry in every court in the country. You'll be ruined."

"I am already ruined, Rodrigo," I whispered back, my eyes never leaving his. "You took my son's first years. Do you really think money scares me now?"

I walked past him, my heels clicking sharply against the marble foyer, and pulled the door open myself.

Standing on the porch was Officer Vance, a tall, broad-shouldered woman with a stern expression, flanked by a social worker holding a thick leather-bound dossier. Behind them, the flashing blue lights of a patrol cruiser painted the white pillars of the porch in an eerie, pulsing violet.

"Mrs. Alvarez?" the officer asked, her eyes scanning my face and then looking past me into the brightly lit, suffocatingly opulent foyer.

"Yes," I said, stepping aside. "Thank God you're here. My son is inside, and he is in immediate danger of neglect and psychological trauma."

The social worker, a kind-faced woman named Mrs. Gable, stepped past me with quick, practiced efficiency. "Where is the child?"

Before I could point toward the living room, Teresa's shrill voice pierced the hallway. "This is a private residence! You have no warrant to barge in here based on the lies of a disgruntled, absent mother who abandoned her family for a career abroad!"

Officer Vance didn't even blink. She stepped fully into the foyer, her hand resting casually near her utility belt, projecting an aura of absolute authority that immediately shrank Teresa back into her seat. "Ma'am, under emergency welfare provisions and direct orders from Judge Sterling, we are executing a temporary protective custody hold. Step away from the children."
