Chapter 5 - The Legal Counter-Strike

On Monday morning, instead of going to my marketing firm, I paid a visit to the top family law attorney in the state: Eleanor Vance. I laid out the financial records, the text messages I had uncovered, the proofs of my sole payments toward the mortgage, and the documentation of emotional distress inflicted upon my biological children.

Eleanor reviewed the documents, a sharp smile spreading across her face. "Mrs. Carter, your husband and his ex-wife have made a terrible mistake. They assumed your silence was weakness. In reality, you’ve been financing their war against you."

"What are my options?" I asked.

"We file for divorce immediately," Eleanor said. "We freeze all joint assets. Since the down payment on the house came from your pre-marital asset (your condo), and you have documented proof of paying 80% of the mortgage and utilities, we will petition for exclusive occupancy of the home. Furthermore, we can subpoena the full text records to prove a toxic environment was being intentionally manufactured, which justifies protecting your children, Olivia and Ethan."

"Do it," I said without a hint of hesitation.

By Tuesday afternoon, Daniel was served the divorce papers at his workplace.

An hour later, my phone lit up with dozens of missed calls from him, followed by frantic texts. I ignored them all, directing him to speak only through my attorney.

Then came the calls from Melissa. She actually had the nerve to call my personal number. I answered, pressing record on a secondary device.

"Rachel, you crazy bitch!" Melissa screamed into the phone. "What do you think you're doing? You're ruining Daniel's life! You're kicking my kids out of their home?!"

"It's my home, Melissa," I said smoothly. "The home my hard work paid for. The home where you instructed your children to destroy my daughter's Christmas gifts and shatter my eight-year-old son's handmade airplane."

"They are children! You're a bitter, insecure woman who couldn't get them to love you!"

"No, Melissa," I replied. "I am a woman who realized that trying to buy the respect of vipers is a waste of money. Oh, and by the way? I have copies of the entire group chat. The parental alienation, the harassment, the malicious damage to property. My lawyer is very excited to introduce them to the judge. I wonder how the court will feel about your custody agreement when they see how you use your children as weapons."

There was a sudden, sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. Melissa hung up.

The battle lines were drawn.
