Chapter 4 - Unearthing the Shadow

Over the weekend, Daniel stayed at a motel near Melissa’s house, claiming he needed time to "sort things out." I gladly gave him the space. With the house quiet, I sat down at the family computer—the iMac in the den that everyone used, which happened to be registered under my iCloud account.
Because Jason and Alyssa had used the computer frequently to log into their social media and messaging apps, and because they were careless enough to click "remember me," I found a treasure trove of information.
I opened the synchronized messaging app. What I found made my blood run cold.
There was a massive, years-long group chat between Melissa, Jason, and Alyssa. I scrolled through hundreds of messages.
Melissa: Did the maid make you clean your rooms again? Tell her your father pays for a cleaning service (even though he doesn't). Don't let her boss you around.
Jason: She tried to make me do dishes tonight. I told her she doesn't make the rules. Dad didn't even defend her haha.
Melissa: Good boy. Remember, she’s just trying to replace me. She’s using your father’s money to buy your love with those shoes. Take the shoes, but remind her who your real family is. She’s temporary.
Alyssa: She bought Olivia those expensive markers for Christmas. I want to ruin them.
Melissa: Do it, sweetie. If she complains, tell her your dad runs the house. Let her know she has no power.
The text messages went on and on. Melissa had been systematically poisoning these children against me from day one, turning every act of kindness I performed into a calculated weapon. And the worst part? Daniel knew about some of it.
I found an email thread between Daniel and Melissa from six months prior. Melissa had written: “Your wife is getting too comfortable acting like their mother. If she keeps pushing them to do chores, I’ll take you back to court for full custody and increase child support.”
Daniel’s response? “Don’t worry, I’ll keep Rachel in check. She won’t interfere with the kids.”

He hadn't been "exhausted." He had been protecting his own wallet at the expense of my dignity. He allowed his children to treat me like trash because he was terrified of Melissa taking him back to court.
I sat back in my chair, a cold, hard anger radiating through my veins. They thought I was a puppet they could manipulate. They forgot that I was the one pulling the financial strings of this entire household.
