Chapter 4 - The Poisoner’s Trail

The revelation sent shockwaves through Alejandro’s inner circle. He realized that the woman he had welcomed into his home, his bed, and his family was a predator who had orchestrated their entire romance from the very beginning.

"Where is Mateo Estrada now?" Alejandro asked Ramiro, his voice laced with venom.

"He operates out of an abandoned warehouse district near Tepito," Ramiro answered. "He’s been mixing synthetic toxins for high-end blackmailers and corrupt elites. Regina was paying him half a million pesos per dose."

Alejandro looked through the glass window toward the living room, where Lucía was quietly bringing a bowl of warm broth to Emiliano. The contrast was stark: one woman had used every ounce of her charm to destroy a child for money, while another woman, earning a humble salary, had risked her own livelihood and safety to protect him.

Alejandro walked back to the master bedroom where Lucía was sitting with his son.

"Lucía," Alejandro said softly.

Lucía stood up quickly, lowering her head respectfully. "Yes, Mr. Alejandro?"

"Look at me, please," Alejandro requested gently. When she raised her eyes, he continued, "I owe you an apology. I was blind. I trusted doctors, prestige, and my own foolish ego over the clear distress of my child. If you hadn't stepped forward tonight, I would have signed my son's life away."

"I only did what any decent person would do, sir," Lucía said softly. "Emiliano is just a child. He didn't deserve that cruelty."

"You are more than a nanny to this house now, Lucía," Alejandro said, his eyes filled with genuine gratitude. "You are Emiliano’s guardian angel. But this isn't over yet. We need to catch the man who supplied her with this poison before they realize Regina has been caught."

Alejandro devised a high-stakes trap. Using Regina’s confiscated phone, Ramiro sent a text message to Mateo Estrada: “The child is moving to the clinic tonight. I need the final, concentrated dosage immediately. Meet me at the standard location in thirty minutes.”

Mateo’s reply came back almost instantly: “Double the price. I’ll be there.”

Alejandro turned to Ramiro. "Mobilize our security team. We are going to Tepito. And we aren't leaving until that bastard gives us every single piece of evidence he has on Regina."

Before leaving, Alejandro walked over to Emiliano’s bed. He knelt down and kissed his son’s forehead.

"Daddy is going to fix this, son," Alejandro whispered. "The monster is never coming back."

"Daddy?" Emiliano whimpered softly.

"Yes, my boy?"

"Take Lucía’s advice... she knows how to protect us," Emiliano murmured before drifting back to sleep.

Alejandro looked up at Lucía and gave her a firm, grateful nod. "Stay with him. Lock this door from the inside. Ramiro’s best men will be guarding this hallway."

"Be careful, Mr. Alejandro," Lucía said softly, her heart aching for the family that had been ripped apart by greed.

Alejandro straightened his jacket, his eyes turning to steel. "Careful isn't what I’m going to be tonight."
