Chapter 4 - The Boardroom and the Backyard

Monday morning arrived with the crisp efficiency of a well-oiled machine. I traded my usual t-shirt and jeans for a bespoke navy suit, though I still wore my favorite comfortable leather loafers—a small rebellion against corporate stiffness.

At 8:45 AM, my driver pulled up to the sleek, glass-fronted skyscraper that housed Vanguard Holdings and its subsidiary, Apex Creative Group. As I walked through the lobby, the security guards and receptionists bowed their heads respectfully.

"Good morning, Mr. Peterson," they chimed.

"Good morning," I replied with a warm smile.

I took the private elevator to the penthouse suite. My executive assistant, Marcus, was already waiting with a tablet and a fresh cup of black coffee.

"The onboarding for the new department heads starts in fifteen minutes, Arthur," Marcus said, walking alongside me to my office. "Melissa Peterson is in the holding room. She arrived an hour early. She looks... incredibly nervous."

"She should be," I murmured, taking a sip of the coffee. "Have the HR department run her through the standard training, but make sure she knows she reports directly to the creative review board, which I chair."

"Are you going to be tough on her?" Marcus asked gently. He had been with me since the beginning and knew my family history.

"I’m going to be fair," I answered. "But fair to Melissa means holding her to the exact standards she claimed I lacked. She needs to understand that success isn't about looking down on others; it's about lifting your team up."

At 10:00 AM, the first executive briefing began. I entered the main conference room, where the new hires were seated around a massive mahogany table. Melissa sat near the middle, looking immaculate in a sharp gray pantsuit. But when she saw me walk in—not as the casual, patient younger brother from the rental house, but as the poised, silent force behind the multi-million-dollar empire—her breath hitched.

I took my place at the head of the table.

"Welcome to Vanguard," I said, my voice echoing off the glass walls. "Many of you are here because you are the best in your respective fields. But at Vanguard, talent is only half of the equation. The other half is character. We do not tolerate egos, we do not tolerate toxicity, and we do not tolerate those who climb by stepping on the shoulders of others. We succeed as a collective, or we fail as individuals."

I made direct eye contact with Melissa as I spoke the last sentence. She held my gaze, her eyes wide, nodding slowly. For the first time in our adult lives, she was truly listening to me.
