Chapter 3 - The Weight of the Crown

For a long minute, the only sound was the distant laughter of the children jumping in the backyard bounce house. Melissa’s breathing was shallow. She looked at me as if she were seeing a ghost, or perhaps a judge delivering a life sentence.

"Arthur..." she started, her voice cracking. "I... I didn't know."

"Clearly," I replied, setting my phone down on the table next to the half-cut cake. "Because if you thought I had power over you, you would have treated me with respect. But because you thought I was weak, because you thought I was struggling, you felt entitled to use my son’s birthday to empty your chest of all your bitter grievances."

"That's not fair!" she cried out, a defensive spark briefly flaring before dying out under my calm gaze. "You don't understand what it's been like for me! Ever since Mom died, I’ve had to carry the burden of being the 'successful' sibling. I’ve had to work eighty hours a week at my old agency, dealing with terrible clients, just to keep up appearances. And you... you just seemed to coast. You got to stay home. You got to play dad. I thought you were throwing your life away!"

"So you decided to punish me for it?" I asked. "On Ethan's birthday? In front of his friends?"

Melissa looked down, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes. She didn't have an answer.

"I have spent the last three years trying to keep this family together, Melissa," I said, my voice carrying the quiet authority I usually reserved for boardroom meetings. "I invited you today because I wanted my son to have his aunt in his life. I tolerated your passive-aggressive comments about my house, my food, and my lifestyle because I hoped, eventually, you would heal from the anger you hold toward Mom. But today, you crossed a line."

I picked up the cake knife and cleanly sliced another piece of chocolate cake.

"Your contract at Apex has a standard ninety-day probationary period," I continued smoothly. "As the Chief Creative Officer of Vanguard, I review every single director-level performance on day thirty, sixty, and ninety. If I sign off, your position is permanent. If I don't, you are terminated with cause, and your reputation in this city's marketing sector will be effectively finished."

Melissa swallowed hard. "Are you going to fire me?"

"I don't let personal feelings dictate my business decisions," I said. "But I do demand absolute professional integrity. On Monday morning at nine o'clock, you will report to the Apex headquarters for your onboarding. You will be treated like any other employee. And I suggest you prepare yourself, because my standards are incredibly high."

She nodded numbly, her face still pale. Without another word, she picked up her purse, avoided looking out the window at the happy children, and quietly slipped out the front door.

I took a deep breath, smoothing down my shirt. The storm had passed, but the real work of rebuilding our fractured family had only just begun. I picked up the plate of chocolate cake and walked out into the warm afternoon sun to join my son.
