Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Wrath

The lobby of First National Bank was filled with high-profile clients and bank executives who stopped and stared in utter shock as Edward Vance and Sylvia Armenta were marched out in handcuffs by law enforcement officers.
Sylvia attempted to hide her face behind her hair, screaming threats at her attorneys, while Edward walked with his head hung low, the arrogant smile permanently wiped from his face.
Outside, news cameras—tipped off by Eleanor’s legal team—were already waiting. flashes exploded as Edward was forced into the back of a police cruiser. The man who cared so deeply about his social standing and corporate reputation was now the lead story on the evening news: Prominent Financial Advisor Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Fraud and Conspiracy Scheme.
Once the police cars sped away with their sirens blaring, I stood on the steps of the bank, taking a deep, clean breath of fresh air for what felt like the first time in weeks.
"Are you okay, Lauren?" Eleanor asked softly, putting a warm hand on my shoulder.
"I’m better than okay," I said, turning to her. "I'm free. But we're not done yet, are we?"
"Not by a long shot," Eleanor said with a ruthless smile. "Phase one was stopping the theft and getting them arrested. Phase two is wiping the floor with him in family court and securing absolute, irreversible protection for you and Danny."
Within four hours, Eleanor filed an emergency motion in the Fulton County Superior Court.
We appeared before Judge Evelyn Harper—a renowned, no-nonsense family court judge known for her zero-tolerance policy against child endangerment and domestic fraud.
Because of the overwhelming evidence—the tape recordings, Dr. Pineda’s sworn confession, the financial paper trail, and the pending criminal charges—Judge Harper signed an immediate, comprehensive Emergency Order:
Sole Legal and Physical Custody of Daniel Vance was awarded exclusively to me.
Emergency Restraining Order: Edward Vance was issued a strict 1,000-foot order of protection prohibiting any contact with me or Danny, effective immediately upon any potential release on bail.
Asset Freeze: All of Edward’s personal bank accounts, stock portfolios, and real estate interests were immediately frozen by court order pending civil forfeiture and divorce proceedings.
Surrender of Passports: Edward’s passport was confiscated to prevent flight risk.
When the judge struck her gavel, finalizing the emergency orders, I sat in the courtroom chair and finally let out a long, quiet sigh. The system he tried to weaponize against me had turned around and crushed him instead.
That afternoon, I drove to Clara’s house to pick up Danny.
When I walked through the door, Danny ran straight into my arms, wrapping his little legs around my waist and burying his head in my neck.
"Mommy!" he cried softly. "Are you okay? Is Daddy mad?"
I held him so tightly, feeling his heartbeat against mine. I pulled back, stroked his hair, and looked into his big, beautiful eyes with the purest joy I had ever felt.
"Daddy isn't ever going to hurt us or take anything from us again, sweetheart," I whispered, kissing his forehead. "Mommy fixed it. We are safe. I promise you, we are completely safe."

Danny’s eyes lit up with profound relief. "Really? We don't have to be scared anymore?"
"Never again," I said, holding his small hand. "Let's go home."
