Chapter 3 - Countermove in the Dark

Dr. Marcella Pineda’s eyes widened behind her designer glasses. For a split second, a flash of genuine panic crossed her face, before she quickly tried to reclaim her professional composure.

"Mrs. Vance, I don't know how you got in here, but this is a severe breach of protocol," Pineda said, standing up and reaching for her desk phone. "I will have security escort you out."

"Go ahead and call them," I said, leaning over her desk, my eyes locked on hers. "Call security. Call the police. Call the state medical board. In fact, let's call the District Attorney together. Because in my pocket, I have an audio recorder running, and my attorney is currently filing an emergency injunction against you for fraud, medical malpractice, and falsifying psychiatric evaluation reports for monetary kickbacks."

Pineda’s hand froze over the phone receiver. The color drained completely from her cheeks.

"I... I don't know what you're talking about," she stammered, though her shaking fingers betrayed her. "Mr. Vance brought compelling evidence regarding your severe emotional instability and recent neurological trauma post-surgery—"

"Mr. Vance paid you," I corrected her coldly. "Or perhaps Sylvia Armenta did? Which one of them transferred funds into your off-shore account, Doctor? Because my financial forensic team is already digging through Edward's paper trail."

That was a bluff—Eleanor’s forensic team was only just getting started—but it hit the bullseye. Pineda swallowed hard and sank back into her leather chair.

"Lauren, listen to me," Pineda said, her voice dropping into a desperate whisper. "Edward told me you were abusive toward your son. He showed me medical documents showing you were heavily dependent on narcotics following your surgery!"

"He forged them," I said with lethal calm. "And you accepted them without ever speaking to me, evaluating me, or verifying them with my real surgeon. You signed an affidavit declaring me mentally incompetent so he could take my child and my fortune."

Pineda buried her face in her hands. "He promised me a quarter of a million dollars once the property transfers went through. He said you were going to ruin him in a divorce anyway..."

I felt a cold rage burning through my veins, but I kept my composure. "You are going to hand over every document, every email, every text message, and every record Edward Vance and Sylvia Armenta sent you. Right now. Or Eleanor Vance—my lead council—will have a federal warrant served on this office before sunset."

Thirty minutes later, I walked out of Dr. Pineda’s office carrying a thick manila folder containing signed email exchanges between Edward and Sylvia, detailing their entire blueprint.

They had planned it with surgical precision:

Use my post-surgery recovery to trick me into signing a General Power of Attorney.

Send me on a fake business trip to Chicago (which Edward had secretly arranged through a phony consultancy lead).

While I was in mid-air, file the emergency psychiatric petition with Dr. Pineda's fraudulent signature.

Clean out my primary investment accounts and transfer title of our $2.5 million home into a shell company owned by Sylvia Armenta.

Observers and court officers would pick up Danny from school under an emergency protective custody order, placing him in Edward's sole temporary care while I was framed as an unstable, drug-addicted runaway mother.

My blood ran hot and cold. It wasn't just a betrayal; it was an execution of my entire life.

I met Eleanor at her law office in downtown Atlanta. She spread the papers across her conference table, examining the email chains with sharp, analytical eyes.

"This is extraordinary," Eleanor whispered, a cold smile touching her lips. "They put it all in writing. Sylvia even wrote an email saying: 'Once the kid is locked down, she won't have a penny left to hire a lawyer to contest it.'"

"What is our next move?" I asked, gripping the edge of the table.

"Edward still thinks you're playing along," Eleanor said, looking up at me. "He thinks you're sitting at home waiting for your rescheduled flight tomorrow. He doesn't know you have Danny. He doesn't know Pineda broke. He doesn't know we have their paper trail."

"So what do we do?"

"We set a trap," Eleanor declared, her eyes glowing with ferocious determination. "We let him think his plan is going smoothly. Tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM, Edward and Sylvia are scheduled to meet at the First National Bank downtown to execute the asset transfers using the forged Power of Attorney. We won't stop them from walking into that bank."

May you like

"We won't?"

"No," Eleanor grinned. "We're going to let them walk right into the vault... and close the door behind them."
