Chapter 4 - The Trap Is Set

That night, I returned to the empty house. Every shadow in the hallway seemed to whisper of Edward's treachery. I walked into Danny’s room, picked up his favorite stuffed dinosaur from the bed, and squeezed it tightly to my chest. I swore to myself that Edward would never set foot in this house again.
At 10:00 PM, the front door unlocked. I heard Edward's footsteps lingering in the foyer. I sat in the dimly lit living room, reading a book, perfectly composed.
"Lauren?" he called out, stepping into the room. He looked slightly flustered. "Where’s Danny? His room is empty."
I turned a page calmly. "Oh, Clara called. She wanted to take Danny to a kids' sleepover with her boys. I thought it would be nice for him to have a fun night while I prepped for my flight tomorrow."
Edward blinked, momentarily thrown off balance. "You... sent him to Clara's? Without asking me?"
"You were busy with your 'clients,' Edward," I replied smoothly, looking up with an innocent smile. "Besides, you're always saying how much you want me to rest. I thought you'd be happy."
He swallowed his frustration, forcing a tense smile. "Right. Of course, honey. That was... thoughtful of you."
"Are you coming to bed?" I asked softly.
"In a bit," he said, staring at his phone. "I have some last-minute work emails to finish."
I knew what those "work emails" were. He was confirming his morning rendezvous with Sylvia Armenta at the bank. I went upstairs, locked my bedroom door quietly, and waited for dawn.
The next morning, Edward left early, impeccably dressed in his bespoke blue suit. He kissed my cheek before leaving, whispering, "Have a safe flight to Chicago today, Lauren."
"I'm sure everything will land exactly where it belongs, Edward," I replied.
As soon as his car turned the corner, Eleanor pulled into my driveway in a sleek black SUV. I got into the passenger seat. Beside her sat Detective Thomas Vance (no relation to Edward), a senior detective from the Financial Crimes Division whom Eleanor had briefed late last night.
"Everything is set," Detective Vance said, adjusting his tie. "We have state troopers and bank security coordinated. The moment Edward presents the fraudulent Power of Attorney and attempts to liquidate your accounts, he executes the felony."
"And Sylvia?" I asked.
"Sylvia Armenta is currently pulling into the bank parking lot," Eleanor said, looking at a tracking application on her phone. "Our private investigator has had her under surveillance since 7:00 AM. She brought a briefcase."
We arrived at First National Bank ten minutes before 9:00 AM. Eleanor, Detective Vance, two undercover officers, and I entered through the executive rear entrance and were escorted directly into the bank manager’s glass-walled corner office overlooking the main lobby and high-value transactional suites.
At precisely 9:02 AM, Edward Vance walked through the front revolving doors, looking like a triumphant titan of finance. Walking arm-in-arm beside him was Sylvia Armenta, wearing a sharp crimson dress, high heels, and an arrogant smile.
They sat down in the private wealth management office across from Mr. Jenkins, the senior vice president of the bank, who had already been briefed by Eleanor and law enforcement.
From behind the one-way glass of the adjacent conference room, I watched every movement.
Edward pulled out the General Power of Attorney document, pushing it across the desk with practiced confidence.
"Mr. Jenkins," Edward said smoothly, his voice picked up by the hidden microphone on the desk. "My wife, Lauren, has unfortunately suffered a severe psychiatric relapse and is currently incapacitated. Under this legal Power of Attorney, I need to immediately liquidate all joint investment portfolios and transfer the title of the residential real estate assets to Ms. Armenta's holding company for asset protection."
Sylvia leaned back, crossing her legs, a smug, victorious smile playing on her lips. "We need this processed immediately, Mr. Jenkins. Time is of the essence."
Mr. Jenkins examined the papers slowly, putting on his reading glasses. "I see, Mr. Vance. And Mrs. Vance is completely aware of this total transfer?"
"She isn't in a state to understand, unfortunately," Edward lied smoothly, forcing a fake sigh of sorrow. "It's tragic, really. But as her legal guardian and spouse, I must act in her best interest."

"Is that so, Edward?"
The door to the private office swung open.
