Chapter 8 - A New Foundation

Six months later, spring arrived with vibrant colors and warm breezes that swept through our neighborhood.
Our household had expanded in the safest, most beautiful way possible. I gave birth to a healthy baby boy whom we named Julian. The afternoon we brought Julian home from the hospital, I held my breath for a brief second, remembering the icy terror that had gripped my chest six months prior.
I needn't have worried.
Leah, now six and a half and bursting with confident energy, marched right up to my hospital bed with a huge handmade sign that read: WELCOME HOME JULIAN! YOU CAN HAVE ALL THE SPACE YOU WANT!
She didn't pack a backpack. She didn't hide her toys. Instead, she gently leaned over the bassinet, carefully placing her beloved stuffed rabbit right next to her new baby brother.
"Look, Julian," Leah whispered proudly, stroking his tiny hand. "This is your home now. You never have to go anywhere, and I will share all my toys with you."

Michael wrapped his arms around my shoulders from behind, kissing the top of my head as we watched our daughter beam with maternal pride.
We had successfully dismantled the toxic legacy of my family's cruelty and built something unbreakable in its place. The legal settlement had finally cleared, and a portion of the recovered trust funds had been quietly placed into a dedicated college fund for Leah—ensuring her future was secure, permanent, and completely untouchable.
