Saturday night was the night of my parents' grand anniversary gala at the exclusive St. Regis Ballroom downtown. Despite the financial freezes and Marcus's ongoing investigation, my mother had stubbornly insisted on proceeding with the event, believing that putting on a lavish public display would force me to back down.

She severely underestimated the reach of a forensic audit combined with a determined mother.

Michael, Leah, and I stayed home. We built a massive fort out of sofa cushions and blankets in the living room, watching animated movies and eating popcorn. Leah laughed—a real, bubbling laugh that reached her eyes and chased away every lingering ghost of the orphanage.

Around 8:30 PM, my phone buzzed with updates from Marcus and photos from a local society reporter friend who had managed to slip into the gala.

The photos were magnificent.

In the first picture, my mother stood near the grand entrance of the ballroom, looking radiant in a custom emerald gown, smiling brightly for the cameras.

In the second picture, taken twenty minutes later, two federal marshals and a process server stood directly in front of her and Greg, handing them a stack of thick legal papers freezing all corporate assets and placing a lien on the family estate.

My sister Rachel was captured in the background, her mouth frozen open in mid-sentence, her expensive handbag slipping from her limp fingers onto the polished marble floor. The society page editor had titled the developing story online: High-Society Scandal: Real Estate Fraud Shocks St. Regis Gala.

I locked my phone, tossed it onto the couch, and turned back to Leah, who was busy tucking her stuffed rabbit safely under a pillow.

"Mommy?" Leah asked softly, looking up at me with wide, trusting eyes.
