Chapter 5 - The Grand Invitation

Friday evening arrived with a dense, chilly fog rolling in from the coast. Michael was in the kitchen preparing dinner while Leah sat at the counter, carefully decorating sugar cookies with far too much rainbow sprinkles—a sign that her sense of childhood play was finally returning.

The doorbell rang.

Michael looked at me, frowning. We weren't expecting anyone.

I walked to the front door and opened it. Standing on the porch was Rachel, her designer coat clutched tightly around her, her face pale and devoid of its usual arrogant smirk. Behind her stood Chloe, looking bewildered, holding a single small plastic doll.

"Clara," Rachel breathed, her voice cracking. "You have to call off your lawyer. Greg is talking about professional disbarment, the bank froze our mortgage, and Mother is having a complete meltdown. She's threatening to cancel the anniversary party."

"Then cancel it," I said, leaning against the doorframe, crossing my arms over my slightly rounded stomach.

"You can't do this to us! We're family!" Rachel cried, taking a step forward.

"Family?" I scoffed, the word tasting like ash. "When you looked at my daughter—a little girl who survived the terror of abandonment—and whispered poison into her ear just to make your own child feel superior, you ceased being my family. You became a parasite."

Rachel’s eyes darted past me into the foyer, catching sight of Leah at the kitchen counter. For a split second, a flash of malicious defiance crossed Rachel's features, but it was instantly crushed by her current desperation.

"She's not even your real blood, Clara!" Rachel blurted out, her composure finally shattering completely. "Why are you destroying our lives for an orphan?!"

From the kitchen, the sound of a plastic cookie cutter hitting the tile floor echoed sharply.

Michael immediately stepped out into the hallway, his face dark with fury, but I raised my hand to stop him. I stepped completely out onto the porch, closing the front door behind me so Leah wouldn't see the ugly contours of my sister's hatred.

"Listen to me very carefully, Rachel," I said, stepping close enough that she could see the absolute ice in my eyes. "Leah is my blood in every way that matters. And you? You are about to lose everything your greedy hands ever touched. Every dollar, every property, every ounce of social standing you built on stolen foundations."

"You can't prove anything!" Rachel hissed.

"Marcus has already filed the forensic report with the district attorney's office," I lied smoothly, watching her color drain entirely. "Greg signed falsified trust documents. That’s a federal offense, Rachel. Pack your bags. You might need that backpack more than my daughter ever did."
