Chapter 7 - The Settlement
By Monday morning, the fallout was absolute.
My mother’s high-society circle evaporated overnight. When the news broke that Greg had systematically embezzled from a family trust and that the grand estate was tied up in federal litigation, their phone stopped ringing. Their friends, desperate to distance themselves from the scandal, pretended they didn't know them.
Rachel and her family were forced to vacate the ancestral home within seventy-two hours. With their bank accounts frozen and credit cards barred, they had to move into a modest, cramped two-bedroom apartment across town—a bitter taste of what it meant to genuinely have to "make space" in a world that didn't cater to their entitlement.
My mother drove out to our house on Tuesday morning.
I watched from the living room window as her sleek luxury sedan—now scheduled for repossession—pulled up to the curb. She walked slowly up the driveway, looking older, smaller, and utterly defeated.
I opened the door before she could even knock.
"Clara," my mother whispered, her voice cracking. "Please. You have to call the lawyers off. They’re seizing everything. I have nowhere to live once the bank forecloses."
"You have a pension, Mother," I replied calmly, leaning against the doorframe. "You have your health. And you have the exact same amount of space that you tried to force my six-year-old daughter to accept."
Tears spilled over my mother’s mascara-stained cheeks. "I was foolish. Rachel manipulated me... she said—”
"You chose to listen," I interrupted sharply. "You chose to look at a terrified little girl who had already lost everything, and you decided she was disposable. That is something I will never forgive, and it is something I will never allow near my children again."
"I'm your mother," she sobbed.

She opened her mouth, closed it, and slowly turned around, walking back down the driveway without another word.
