Chapter 9 - The Trial of Shadows

I burst through the front door of 412 Birch Street just as Sarah was locking the heavy wooden basement door.
“Sarah!” I roared.
She spun around, her face flushed with anger, but instantly tried to pull her mask back on. “Michael! What—what are you doing home? I thought—”
“Get away from the door,” I said, my voice carrying a quiet, lethal weight that made her step back.
Behind me, the front door crashed open again. Detective Vance and two uniformed officers surged into the hallway, followed by the social workers.
“Sarah Hayes,” Vance announced, his shield held high. “Step away from the door and place your hands behind your back.”
“What is this?!” Sarah screamed, her voice cracking into a high, hysterical pitch. “Michael, what did you do?! She’s crazy! She was throwing tantrums! I was just putting her in her room!”
“We have the live video feed, Sarah,” Vance said calmly as the cuffs clicked around her wrists. “We’ve had it for weeks.”
The color completely drained from her face. She looked at me, her eyes burning with pure, unadulterated hatred. “You set me up. You absolute monster. She’s my daughter! You have nothing!”
“I have everything,” I said quietly.
I ignored her screams as the officers led her out into the cold night, the red and blue emergency lights painting the walls of the house in frantic patterns. I unlocked the basement door, rushed down the stairs, and pulled Emily into my arms.
She was shaking, her face wet with tears, but as I held her tight, her tiny arms wrapped around my neck.
“You came,” she sobbed.
“I told you,” I whispered, kissing her hair. “I don't leave.”
The legal battle that followed was grueling. Sarah’s family hired expensive lawyers who tried to paint me as an unstable, manipulative stepfather who used my medical knowledge to frame a loving mother. But the evidence was insurmountable. The video of her dragging Emily by her hair, the forensic analysis of the bruises, and the "House Rules" document signed in Emily’s own hand destroyed her defense.

The judge did not show mercy. Sarah was sentenced to five years in state prison, with a permanent, lifetime restraining order.
I was granted sole legal and physical custody of Emily.
