Chapter 8 - The Breaking Point

The trap was set for Friday.

I told Sarah I had an emergency double-shift at the trauma center and wouldn't be home until Saturday morning. I packed my bag, kissed her goodbye, and walked out the door at 4:00 PM.

Instead of going to the hospital, I drove three blocks away, parked my car in an alley, and sat in the driver's seat with my laptop open. Detective Vance and two social workers from the state emergency response team were parked in an unmarked van a block behind me.

At 6:15 PM, the kitchen camera turned on.

Sarah and Emily were at the dining table. Sarah was drinking red wine, her face flushed.

“Where is the blue folder, Emily?” Sarah’s voice was dangerously low. “The one with the tax documents on the counter. I told you to put it in my office.”

“I... I don't know, Mommy,” Emily cried, her voice trembling. “I didn't see it.”

“Don't lie to me!” Sarah slammed her hand on the table. The wine glass rattled, spilling dark red liquid across the wood. “You did this on purpose. You’re trying to make me look bad in front of Michael!”

She stood up, grabbing Emily by her hair. Emily let out a sharp, terrified scream.

My phone in my pocket began to vibrate violently—three short bursts. The silent alarm on Emily's watch.

“She’s acting,” I said into my radio to Vance. “Go. Now.”

On the screen, Sarah was dragging Emily toward the basement door. “You want to be a liar? You can stay in the dark until you learn to tell the truth!”

“No! Mommy, please! It’s cold! Please!” Emily screamed, her hands scraping against the doorframe.

I threw my car door open and sprinted down the street.
