Chapter 6 - The Quiet Surveillance

I began to build a fortress of safety around Emily without Sarah knowing.

I set up a "secret game" with Emily. I gave her a small, silver digital watch. “Emily,” I told her when we were alone in the backyard, pretending to look at the garden. “If you ever feel scared, or if Mommy is getting very angry, I want you to press this side button three times. It will send a silent vibration to my phone at the hospital. No matter what I am doing, I will know.”

She looked at the watch, her eyes wide. “Is it magic?”

“It’s our magic,” I smiled, kissing her forehead. “And remember our promise. You are never, ever alone.”

Over the next week, the digital diary on my phone grew. I recorded everything:

Oct 22, 4:15 PM: Sarah cancels Emily’s playdate, telling the other mother that Emily is "mentally unstable."

Oct 24, 6:30 PM: Sarah pinches Emily’s shoulder under the dinner table when Emily tries to talk about her art class.

Oct 27, 8:00 AM: Sarah tells Emily she is the reason her biological father ran away.

Every entry felt like a drop of acid on my soul. But I kept writing. I kept saving the videos. I was building a cage of evidence, and Sarah was happily stepping into it, completely unaware of the iron bars rising around her.
