Chapter 4 - Under the Flicker of Fluorescent Lights

The next day, I called in a favor.

During my night shift at the hospital, while the fluorescent lights buzzed overhead and the waiting room hummed with the quiet misery of the city, I met with Dr. Aris Thorne. Aris was a forensic pediatrician and a close friend. He had spent twenty years pulling children out of the dark corners of domestic horror.

We sat in the back of the empty cafeteria. I slid the folded, creased paper across the table.

Aris put on his reading glasses. He read the "House Rules" once, then twice. When he looked up, the warmth had completely vanished from his eyes.

“Who wrote the red ink?” he asked.

“My stepdaughter. Emily. She’s seven.”

“And these marks on her arm?” I pulled out my phone, showing him the high-resolution photographs I had taken of the bruising patterns while helping her with her sweater.

Aris zoomed in, his thumb tracing the screen. “Adult handprint. Thumb on the medial side, four fingers on the lateral. High force. This isn't a playful grab, Michael. This is a restraint. A violent one.” He looked at me, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “Who is doing this?”

“My wife,” I said. The word felt like lead in my mouth.

Aris closed his eyes for a moment. “Sarah. The woman you just married. The one who brought cookies to the department last month.” He sighed, rubbing his temples. “If you report this to Child Protective Services right now without a systematic trap, Sarah’s lawyers will tear you apart. She’ll claim you did it. You’re the new stepfather, the night-shift nurse with high-stress exposure. The system is tragically biased in favor of biological mothers who look like they belong on a magazine cover.”

“I know,” I said, my knuckles turning white against my coffee cup. “That’s why I need to catch her in the act. I need her own voice, her own actions, documented beyond a shadow of a doubt.”

“Be careful, Michael,” Aris warned. “People like Sarah don't just fold when they're caught. They burn the whole house down.”
