Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Empire

"We didn't come to fight, Eric," Chloe said firmly as she stepped into our foyer, followed closely by Attorney Sterling.
Eric blocked the staircase leading up to my room, his posture rigid and unwelcoming. "You have five seconds to explain why you're standing in my house before I call the deputies at the gate to physically throw you out."
Sterling held up his hands defensively, his silver hair neatly combed, though his designer suit looked rumpled from a long week of legal emergencies. "Mr. Vance, please. Put down the guard for just a moment. I am no longer representing your mother."
Eric blinked, surprised. "You dropped her?"
"When a client lies to her own legal counsel about felony assault and document tampering, professional ethics require me to withdraw," Sterling replied smoothly. "Furthermore, once Eleanor Vance presented the probate court with the original, unadulterated estate documents from the Sarah Vance archive, my former client's legal standing evaporated. She no longer has access to the corporate trust funds to pay my retainer, nor does she have any legal claim over the family estate."
Chloe stepped forward, her eyes bright with a mixture of vindication and profound sadness. "Eric, Diane is completely unravelling down at the detention center. She’s realized that her empire of lies has finally collapsed. But before the preliminary hearing tomorrow, she wants a face-to-face meeting with you and Claire."
"Never," Eric said instantly, his voice like chipped ice. "She tried to kill my wife and our unborn child. She will never see Claire again, and she sure as hell won't see me."
"Hear us out," Chloe urged softly, stepping closer. "She doesn't want to negotiate or yell. She wants to hand over the final pieces of the puzzle voluntarily. Every hidden Swiss account, every offshore shell company, every corrupted medical record she used to blackmail half the relatives into silence—she has the master password list locked in a safety deposit box. She’s willing to sign it all over to you and Claire, unconditionally, in exchange for a recommendation for leniency from the DA."
Eric stared at them, processing the monumental weight of their offer. For thirty years, Diane had held the entire Vance family hostage with secrets and stolen wealth. Now, the vault was wide open, and the keys were being handed to us.
"Why us?" Eric asked quietly. "Why not the state? Why give it to us?"
"Because," Sterling answered with a faint, knowing smile, "she knows you're the only ones with the moral compass to do what should have been done thirty years ago: return the stolen inheritance to its rightful beneficiaries, starting with Sarah's legacy fund."

Eric looked back up the stairs toward my room, where I stood quietly on the landing, listening to every word. Our eyes met across the space. I gave him a slow, reassuring nod.
We had survived the fall. Now, it was time to finish the story on our own terms.
