Chapter 4 - The Ghost of Aunt Sarah

Eleanor stepped into the sterile hospital room, pulling up a chair without waiting for an invitation. She placed a weathered leather briefcase on the rolling tray table, looking between Eric and me with a mixture of sternness and profound sorrow.
"I take it you found the duplicate file," Eleanor said, glancing at the plastic evidence bag on the counter.
"We found part of it," Eric said, his voice still rigid with shock. "My sister Melissa stole it from Claire's bag during the chaos at the pool. The police are already looking into tampering charges, but I want to know what the hell is going on. What does my mother have to do with Aunt Sarah's legal papers?"
Eleanor let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Your mother, Eric, is a master of illusion. For thirty years, Diane has played the role of the devoted matriarch, the pillar of the Vance family society. But everything she owns—every stock share, every real estate holding, every dollar in that estate—was built on a foundation of blackmail and corporate theft."
She unlocked the leather briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of yellowed legal affidavits, bank statements, and certified letters.
"Sarah Vance was Diane’s older sister," Eleanor explained, laying the papers out under the harsh fluorescent lights. "Thirty years ago, when the family patriarch passed away, he left the controlling shares of Vance Industries to Sarah, because Sarah was the only one with a business degree and the ethical compass to run it. Diane was left with a modest allowance."
I listened intently, pulling the blanket higher around my shoulders as the pieces began to click into place. "So Diane forged the will?"
"Worse," Eleanor replied grimly. "Diane didn't just forge a will; she institutionalized Sarah. With the help of a corrupt family doctor who has since lost his license, Diane had Sarah declared mentally incompetent just three days before the inheritance transfer was finalized. Sarah was locked away in a private sanitarium upstate for over a decade. Her signature was extorted on dozens of asset-transfer documents under the threat of permanent medical isolation."
Eric stared at the documents, his face draining of all color. He picked up a certified medical evaluation dated twenty-five years ago—a document bearing Sarah's shaky, desperate handwriting at the bottom: 'She is stealing everything. If anything happens to me, look in the safety deposit box.'
"Why didn't anyone find this?" Eric whispered. "Why didn't the courts intervene?"
"Because Diane covered her tracks with absolute ruthlessness," Eleanor said. "Anyone who asked questions—lawyers, accountants, distant relatives—was systematically discredited, threatened, or financially ruined. I was Sarah's personal assistant and private investigator. I spent years gathering proof, waiting for an opportunity to break Diane's iron grip on the family trust. But Diane was always too paranoid, too guarded."
Eleanor looked directly at me, her eyes softening. "Until you came along, Claire."
I blinked in surprise. "Me? What did I do?"
"You refused to bow to her," Eleanor said firmly. "You didn't ask for her money, you didn't cower when she insulted your career, and worst of all, you refused to give her access to your private medical portal. To a narcissist like Diane, a woman she cannot control is a threat to her entire kingdom. When she accused you of faking your pregnancy, she wasn't just being malicious—she was panicking. She thought you were a corporate investigator sent by someone to dig into the family's financial past."
Eric slammed his fist lightly against the table. "That's why she pushed you into the pool. It wasn't just cruelty. She wanted to terrify you into submission, or worse, force a miscarriage so she could search your personal belongings herself."

"And she almost succeeded," Eleanor said quietly. She reached into her briefcase and pulled out one final document—a pristine, freshly printed legal notice stamped with a court seal just forty-eight hours prior. "Fortunately, I’ve been tracking Diane’s recent asset liquidations. She’s been trying to quietly sell off the remaining Vance estate properties to flee overseas. And thanks to your sister Melissa recording that assault today, we now have a slam-dunk criminal case for aggravated assault and reckless endangerment of an unborn child."
Eleanor slid the court notice toward Eric. "Which means the grand jury has just signed emergency freeze orders on every single bank account Diane controls. As of three hours ago, your mother is officially locked out of her empire."
