Chapter 1 - The Descent into the Blue

My mother-in-law shoved me into a pool to prove I was faking my pregnancy, but when blood appeared in the water, the entire family stopped laughing.

My mother-in-law’s hands hit my back so hard that I flew over the edge of the pool before I could even scream.

The last thing I saw was Diane’s satisfied smile.

Then the water swallowed me.

My pregnant belly struck the surface first. Pain exploded through my abdomen as chlorinated water rushed into my nose and mouth. I kicked frantically, but my long summer dress wrapped around my legs like a rope.

Above me, the entire family stood frozen around the pool.

Nobody jumped in.

I heard Diane laughing through the water.

“Let’s see if the baby is real now!”

My husband, Eric, finally moved.

He dove in fully dressed, grabbed me under the arms, and dragged me toward the steps. By the time he pulled me out, I was coughing so hard I could barely breathe.

My hands went straight to my stomach.

A sharp cramp twisted low in my abdomen.

“Call 911,” I gasped.

Eric’s sister, Melissa, stared at me with her phone still raised. She had been recording.

Diane crossed her arms. “Stop performing, Claire. Pregnant women swim all the time.”

“You pushed her!” Eric shouted.

“I barely touched her.”

“You shoved her with both hands!”

The family reunion went silent. Children were rushed inside. Eric’s father looked down at the concrete as though refusing to see what had happened could erase it.

Then I felt something warm running down my leg.

When I looked down, there was blood mixed with pool water beneath me.

Eric went pale.

“Oh, God.”

He lifted me into his arms while his cousin called an ambulance. Diane’s confident expression cracked for half a second, but she quickly pointed at me.

“She did that herself. She came here planning this.”

I could hardly process the words.

For three months, Diane had accused me of faking my pregnancy. She said I was trapping Eric for money, even though we had been married for four years and I earned more than he did.

She had demanded ultrasound photos, doctor’s notes, and access to my medical portal.

I refused.

That refusal became her proof.

The ambulance arrived within minutes. As paramedics placed me on a stretcher, a deputy stepped through the gate behind them.

Melissa suddenly lowered her phone.

The deputy noticed.

“Were you recording the incident?”

“No,” she said too quickly.

“I saw her recording,” Eric replied.

Diane stepped between them. “This is a private family matter.”

The deputy’s eyes hardened. “Not anymore.”

As the stretcher rolled toward the driveway, Melissa slipped into the house.

I grabbed the deputy’s sleeve.

“She has the video.”

He turned toward the back door just as Melissa reappeared, clutching my purse.

And through the open zipper, I saw the corner of a sealed hospital envelope I had never shown anyone.

Diane looked at it too.

Her face went completely white.

I thought the worst thing she had done was push me into the pool. But the terror on her face when that hidden envelope appeared told me the attack had started long before that afternoon
